Chapter 4 - The Financial Bleeding

The next morning, after letting Lira and Leo sleep in a real bed for the first time in years, I drove straight to the bank.

I sat down with the branch manager, demanding a full audit of my accounts. I had wired $1,800 a month for five years—over $100,000. On top of that, I had sent large lump sums for the mortgage and property taxes.

The manager looked at his screen, his face dropping.

"Sir… your mother is a joint account holder on your primary checking," he said carefully. "The funds you wired were immediately transferred to a private account under her name. The mortgage on the property..." He swallowed hard. "It hasn't been paid in six months. It’s in pre-foreclosure."

The room spun. "Where did the money go?"

He printed out a stack of statements. It was all there. Designer boutiques. Leased luxury cars for Valerie. Country club memberships. Extravagant vacations to Cabo and Paris. They had burned through the sweat, blood, and isolation of my five years in the desert, treating it like a limitless slush fund.

Worse, they had taken out a secondary line of credit against the house. They had forged my signature.

I walked out of the bank with a thick folder of evidence. The sadness was gone now. The betrayal had burned away every ounce of familial loyalty I had left. All that remained was cold, calculated fury.

They hadn't just abused my family. They had tried to destroy my future.
