Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

"You can't do this!" Brendan roared, finally snapping out of his shock.

He lunged toward me, his hands balled into tight fists, his pride wounded and bleeding.

Before he could even take two full steps, two of Vance’s security guards stepped smoothly in front of me.

One of them planted a firm, heavy hand right in the center of Brendan’s chest, stopping him dead in his tracks.

"I wouldn't do that, Mr. Morrison," the guard warned, his voice low and dangerous.

Suddenly, a second car pulled up outside, its tires squealing against the wet driveway.

Moments later, Arthur, the Executive Vice President of Legal, walked into the dining room carrying a sleek silver briefcase.

Arthur looked at me, taking in my soaked dress and the dirty water pooling at my feet.

Disgust flashed across the older man's face as he turned to look at the Morrison family.

"Cassidy, I brought the documents," Arthur said, handing me a tablet.

"Thank you, Arthur," I replied, signing the digital screen with a quick swipe of my finger.

"Brendan Morrison," Arthur announced, opening his briefcase and pulling out a stack of papers. "Your employment at Vanguard Holdings is terminated, effective immediately, for gross misconduct and embezzlement."

"Embezzlement?!" Diane shrieked, clutching her pearls. "My son is an honest, hardworking man! You're framing him!"

"Your son has been funneling company funds into a private offshore account to buy jewelry and cars for his mistress," Arthur said calmly, gesturing toward Jessica.

Jessica let out a loud gasp and backed away from Brendan as if he were suddenly on fire.

"Brendan..." Jessica stuttered, her eyes wide with panic. "Is it true? You bought my Porsche with stolen money?"

"Jess, baby, I can explain," Brendan pleaded, reaching out for her.

I interrupted their little lovers' quarrel.

"The cars, the jewelry, the bank accounts... it's all frozen," I explained, relishing the look of absolute despair settling over Brendan’s face. "The FBI has already been notified of the fraud."

"You vindictive, crazy bitch!" Brendan spat at me. "You're making this up because I wanted a divorce!"

"No, Brendan," I smiled, feeling my baby kick again—this time, it felt like a kick of victory. "I'm doing this because you made the mistake of thinking you built the empire that I simply allowed you to play in."

Arthur handed a formal notice to a trembling Diane.

"Mrs. Morrison, as a non-employee residing on corporate property, you are trespassing. Leave now, or the police will escort you out."
