Chapter 10 - The White Lantern

One Year Later.
The sun was setting over the North Carolina mountains.
My mother’s new house was perfect. It was a cozy, wrap-around porch property sitting on three acres of land. No country clubs. No pretentious neighbors. Just peace, quiet, and her massive garden.
I pulled my car into the driveway, carrying a bottle of wine and a bag of groceries.
As I walked up the front steps, I noticed something new hanging beside the front door.
It was a beautiful, vintage white lantern, fitted with a soft, warm bulb.
My mother opened the door before I could even knock, wiping flour on her apron.
“You like it?” she asked, noticing me staring at the lantern.
“It’s beautiful, Mom,” I smiled, stepping inside and hugging her. “But I thought you said leaving lights on was a tax on the careless.”
“It is,” she laughed, her eyes sparkling with a fierce, beautiful independence. “But this one is different. This one isn't an emergency code anymore. It’s just a light to let you know that you always have a safe place to land.”
We walked into the kitchen together. The past was buried. The ghosts were locked away in concrete cells.
