Chapter 7 - The Police Arrive

The sound of heavy boots echoing up the grand staircase brought an abrupt end to Julian’s screaming match with Vanessa. Mark Davis stepped aside from the doorway, gesturing for three uniformed officers and two plainclothes detectives from the Major Crimes Division to enter the master suite. At the head of the detail was Detective Sarah Miller—a sharp-eyed, no-nonsense investigator whom my legal team had briefed on the secure video evidence an hour before dawn.
“Mr. Vance,” Detective Miller said, nodding respectfully toward me before fixing her cold gaze on Julian and Vanessa, who were now cowering against the far wall of the bedroom. “We received the direct cloud upload of the infrared surveillance logs from your security contractor at 05:00 hours this morning. The warrants for arrest have been signed by Judge Harrison.”
Julian made one final, desperate, pathetic attempt to leverage his social standing. He straightened his designer collar, puffed out his chest, and pointed a trembling finger at Elena. “Detective, this is an illegal conspiracy! That woman is a convicted felon! My brother is suffering from acute grief-induced paranoia! He paid that domestic to stage this entire scenario so he could cut us out of the family trust! You cannot arrest me on the word of a common thief!”
Detective Miller didn't even blink. She reached into her coat pocket, retrieved a pair of heavy steel handcuffs, and walked directly toward my brother.

“We aren't arresting you on the word of Ms. Elena, Mr. Vance,” Detective Miller said, her voice dripping with professional disdain. “We’re arresting you on the forty-two separate forensic timestamps showing you and Ms. Vanessa introducing lethal scheduled compounds into a minor’s prescribed medical regimen, combined with the interstate bank wire intercepts showing you pledging the anticipated proceeds of the Vance Family Trust as collateral to a known criminal syndicate in Chicago.”
She grabbed Julian by his right wrist—the very same wrist he had used to twist Elena’s arm just ten minutes prior—and twisted it behind his back with practiced efficiency. The sharp, metallic clink of the handcuffs locking into place echoed through the room like the chiming of a church bell. “Julian Vance, you are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and felony endangerment of a child. You have the right to remain silent. I strongly suggest you use it.”
