Chapter 13 - The Deposition of Treason

While Noah rested peacefully under Elena’s watchful care at the coast house, the legal machinery in the city was grinding forward with brutal, unrelenting efficiency. At four o'clock on Monday afternoon, the preliminary bail and arraignment hearing for Julian Vance, Vanessa Vance, and Dr. Gregory Thorne convened in Courtroom 4B of the Federal District Court, presided over by the notoriously strict Judge Arthur Harrison.
I watched the proceedings via a secure, encrypted video link from the study of the cliffside safehouse, alongside Mark Davis and my legal team. On the screen, my brother looked like a shattered shell of the arrogant socialite he had been twenty-four hours prior. Stripped of his tailored suits, wearing a bright orange county jail jumpsuit with his wrists and ankles shackled in heavy steel chains, Julian sat slumped at the defense table, refusing to make eye contact with the courtroom camera.
The Federal Prosecutor, a brilliant, aggressive woman named Evelyn Vance (no relation), didn't pull any punches during her opening motion to deny bail. She projected the infrared footage of Vanessa and Julian poisoning Noah’s medication directly onto the massive courtroom displays for the entire public gallery and press corps to witness.
“Your Honor,” Prosecutor Vance stated, her voice ringing through the digital feed with lethal authority, “what we are presenting today is not merely a domestic financial dispute. It is a calculated, systematic, cold-blooded conspiracy to murder a nine-year-old child for financial gain, orchestrated by his own family members and facilitated by a corrupt medical professional who violated every basic ethical tenet of his oath.”
She held up the thick financial dossier my accountants had provided. “Furthermore, the primary defendant, Julian Vance, has documented, active financial ties to organized criminal syndicates in Chicago and possesses significant offshore liquid assets in non-extradition jurisdictions. If granted bail, the defendants pose an immediate, catastrophic flight risk and a lethal threat to the surviving victims.”
Judge Harrison didn't even bother to hear the stammered, pathetic rebuttals from the court-appointed public defenders assigned to Julian and Vanessa after my legal team froze all of their personal bank accounts.

“Bail is denied for all three defendants,” Judge Harrison declared, his gavel slamming onto the sounding block with the finality of a gunshot. “The defendants are remanded to the maximum-security wing of the Federal Metropolitan Detention Center pending trial. This court stands adjourned.”
I closed the laptop screen, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. The legal fortress was secure; Julian and his co-conspirators were officially locked away where they couldn't touch my son through the legal system ever again.
