Chapter 9 - No Way Out

They tried to run. Of course they did. Rats always flee when the water rises.

Julian and Elena loaded the luggage into Julian's Mercedes and sped toward the private airstrip outside the city. Julian had one last offshore account, a meager stash in the Bahamas, enough to buy them fake passports and a miserable life in hiding.

They didn't know I had disabled the GPS in the Mercedes and rerouted the navigation system.

They drove for an hour in a frantic silence, relying on the screen. The roads grew darker, emptier, surrounded by abandoned industrial warehouses.

"Julian, this isn't the way to the airfield," Elena panicked, looking out the window at the decaying buildings.

"The GPS says it is, shut up!" Julian snapped, flooring the gas pedal.

Suddenly, the car engine sputtered. The dashboard lit up with error codes, and the vehicle slowly rolled to a stop in the middle of a deserted shipping yard. I had remotely killed the battery and locked the electronic doors.

They were trapped inside the freezing luxury car.

A pair of headlights cut through the darkness, illuminating the Mercedes. I stepped out of a black SUV, accompanied by Silas and two federal marshals I had conveniently tipped off about the fugitives' location.

I walked up to the driver's side window and tapped on the glass. Julian was pounding on the steering wheel, screaming obscenities, while Elena hid her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably.

"End of the line, Julian," I said, though he couldn't hear me through the thick glass. He didn't need to. The flashing red and blue lights approaching from the main road said it all.
