Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Machine

The snow fell in thick, blinding sheets as I walked away from the red-brick townhouse. I didn’t look back. I didn't need to. I already knew what the house looked like; I knew every nail, every floorboard, and every lie that currently lived inside it.

I walked for three miles until the numbness in my toes matched the ice in my chest. I ended up at a rundown motel on the edge of the city, a place where cash was king and questions were never asked. I paid for a week in advance with the emergency funds I kept stitched into the lining of my duffel bag.

Once inside the dingy room, I locked the door, pulled the curtains shut, and booted up my encrypted military-grade laptop. It was the only piece of tech I had managed to salvage from my deployment, built to survive an IED, let alone a winter storm.

My fingers flew across the keyboard. The screen cast a pale blue glow over the peeling wallpaper. Before I deployed, I had built Vance Global Enterprises—then called Aegis Tech—from a basement startup into an industry disruptor. Julian thought he was the brains because he handled the venture capitalists. Elena thought she was the heart because she hosted the dinners. But I was the architect.

I pinged the offshore servers located in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland. A biometric prompt appeared. I pressed my thumb to the scanner.

Identity Confirmed: Marcus Thorne. Status: Alive.

The dead-man’s switch deactivated. If I hadn’t logged in by January 1st, all the master patents for our core algorithm would have automatically open-sourced, destroying the company's value. But I was here. And now, the true ownership of the intellectual property was locked back into a ghost corporation called Tartarus Holdings.

Julian was selling software he no longer legally owned. He had built his empire on a foundation of sand, and I was the ocean.

I typed a single command line into the terminal, initiating a shadow audit of Vance Global’s current server architecture. I didn't just want to take my company back. I wanted to watch them bleed for it.
