Chapter 8 - The Hard Reset

Returning to the estate, the silence was no longer heavy; it was peaceful. The caterers were gone, the extravagant floral arrangements had been donated to local hospitals, and the massive white tent on the lawn was being dismantled.

Julian stood on the back deck, watching the crew pack away what was supposed to be the best day of his life.

I walked out with two mugs of black coffee and handed him one.

"So, what happens now?" Julian asked, staring out at the pines. "Do I just go back to my condo in Denver and pretend this didn't happen?"

"No," I said. "You don't pretend it didn't happen. You learn from it."

I took a sip of my coffee. "The trust is indeed locked, Julian. I didn't lie to Chloe about that. I called Marcus last night and had him restructure it."

Julian turned to me, surprised, but he didn't look angry. "Okay. I understand."

"You have lived a life of immense privilege," I explained. "Your father and I built this empire with dirt under our fingernails, but you grew up in the penthouse. You lost your respect for the foundation because you only ever saw the view from the top."

Julian looked down at his shoes. "You're right."

"I am not cutting you out of my life," I continued. "But I am cutting you off from the luxury. You will start at the bottom. You will work on this estate. You will learn the irrigation systems, you will negotiate with the suppliers, and you will learn exactly how much sweat goes into paying the property taxes."

Julian looked out at the massive acreage, the sheer volume of manual labor staring back at him. A week ago, he would have scoffed and called it beneath him.

Today, he nodded slowly. "When do I start?"

"Tomorrow at 5:00 AM," I said. "Dress warm. The wind is brutal."
