Chapter 1 - The Gatekeeper

The security buzzer echoed through the expansive timber-framed office, a harsh, grating sound that cut through the absolute silence of the room. I didn't rush to the intercom. I took my time, sipping my black coffee, feeling the warmth of the mug against my palms. Outside, the Aspen wind whipped through the ancient pines, a fitting backdrop for the storm brewing on my front porch.

I tapped the tablet screen to activate the two-way audio.

"Mom!" Julian's voice cracked through the speaker, desperate and breathless. "Mom, please open the gate. The police are here. They’re turning away the florist and the caterers. There’s been a massive mistake with the permits!"

"There is no mistake, Julian," I said, my voice as level and cold as the frozen lake at the edge of the property.

On the screen, Chloe’s face morphed from panicked to furious. She shoved Julian aside, her custom silk rehearsal gown blowing wildly in the frigid mountain air.

"Margaret, what are you doing?!" Chloe shrieked, her carefully cultivated 'old money' accent slipping into something sharp and shrill. "My father’s guests are arriving in town in three hours! You need to call whoever you called and fix this right now! You are ruining my wedding!"

"Your wedding?" I asked smoothly. "I thought this was a high-society networking event. And since I am apparently a blue-collar embarrassment who doesn't fit the aesthetic, I have removed myself from the equation. Along with my property, my liquor licenses, and my funding."

Next to Chloe, her father, Richard, stepped into the camera’s view. He looked like a man who had just watched his parachute fail to open. He clutched a leather dossier to his chest.

"Margaret, please," Richard begged, his voice dripping with faux diplomacy. "Let’s be reasonable. The kids were stressed. Julian misspoke. We value you immensely. Let us in, and we can discuss this over a glass of wine."

"The wine in that cellar belongs to me, Richard," I replied. "And as of forty-five minutes ago, the Highridge Family Trust reclaimed all temporary event rights due to a breach of the morality and respect clause. The wedding is canceled."

Julian fell to his knees on the stone pathway, the realization finally hitting him. "Mom, please! I’m so sorry! I didn't mean what I said! Chloe just—she wanted everything to be perfect!"

"And now it is," I said. "Perfectly quiet."

I terminated the connection and turned to Marcus, my attorney, who was packing his briefcase with a satisfied smirk.

"Call the local sheriff," I told him. "Tell them to enforce the trespassing order. If they don't leave my gate in ten minutes, have them escorted off the mountain."
