Chapter 9 - The Rebuilding

The fallout was spectacular. The press had a field day. Sterling Industries' stock skyrocketed as the market reacted to my dramatic return and the purging of the corrupt board members. Richard, Julian, and Eleanor were denied bail, facing decades in federal prison.

I spent the next month cleaning house. I restructured the company, promoting the honest workers who had been suppressed by Richard's regime.

But my most important task was at the estate.

I called Maya into the grand study. She walked in hesitantly, wearing her street clothes rather than her uniform.

"You asked to see me, Mr. Sterling?" she asked.

"Arthur," I corrected gently, walking around the desk. "My name is Arthur."

I handed her a thick manila envelope. She opened it, pulling out the deed to a massive, beautifully renovated commercial space downtown, fully funded and licensed as a culinary academy in her name.

She stared at the papers, her hands trembling. "Arthur... I can't accept this. It's too much."

"You gave me my life back, Maya," I said, stepping closer. "When I was in that chair, you didn't see my money. You didn't see my power. You just saw a man who needed kindness. You are the richest person I have ever met in the ways that actually matter."

She looked up at me, tears spilling over her lashes. I reached out, gently wiping a tear from her cheek.

"I don't want you to be my housekeeper anymore, Maya," I whispered. "I want you to be my partner."

She smiled, a brilliant, breathtaking smile, and closed the distance between us, pressing her lips to mine.
