Chapter 2 - The Illusion of Control

Weston Callaway stood in the VIP lobby of the hospital, sipping a black coffee and checking his Rolex. It had been four hours since he dropped the bomb on Sable. He expected her to be hysterical by now. He expected voicemails filled with begging, pleading for a sliver of his wealth or a fraction of his attention.
His phone remained completely silent.
Frowning, he adjusted his tailored cuffs and took the elevator back to the maternity ward. He had instructed his lawyers to draft a quiet annulment based on irreconcilable differences, accompanied by a modest payout that required her absolute silence regarding his new "heir" with Camille.
He pushed open the door to Room 412.
"Listen, Sable, we need to discuss the non-disclosure—"
The words died in his throat. The room was empty. The bed was made. The bassinet was stripped bare.
Panic, sharp and unfamiliar, spiked in his chest. He cornered the nearest floor nurse. "Where is my wife? The woman in 412?"
The nurse blinked, checking her chart. "Ms. Reed checked out against medical advice three hours ago, sir. She signed the release forms and arranged her own transport."
Ms. Reed. She had already dropped his last name.
Weston pulled out his phone and dialed her number. The number you have reached is no longer in service. He tried her email. Bounced back. He called his private banker.
"Mr. Callaway," the banker stammered. "I was just about to call you. The joint account... it’s empty. And the secondary holding accounts you shared with your wife—the routing structures have been scrambled. The funds are legally hers, but we can't trace the destination."
Weston’s blood ran cold. She hadn't just run away. She had surgically extracted herself from his life, taking the exact amount she was legally entitled to under their prenup, moving faster than he could have ever anticipated.

But as his father, Preston, walked down the hospital corridor alongside a glowing, triumphant Camille, holding her four-month-old son, Leo, Weston forced a smile. He was free. He had his male heir. He had the woman his family approved of. Sable was just a temporary glitch in his perfect life.
He had no idea that the glitch was a virus, and it had already infected the foundation of his entire empire.
