Chapter 7 - The Cleanup

By sunrise, the New York Harbor was back to its usual, relentless rhythm. Cargo cranes hummed, container ships moved steadily toward their berths, and the financial district buzzed with the frantic energy of a new trading day.

Inside his penthouse office, Dominic Thorne stood before the massive glass windows, watching the golden morning light wash over the Manhattan skyline.

The desk behind him was clear of the manila folders, the ledger, and the bruised accounts. Marcus stood near the door holding a single, crisp legal document bound in black leather.

“The Croft logistics acquisition is complete, boss,” Marcus reported, his voice crisp and professional. “We absorbed their remaining assets at a fraction of their valuation. Robert Croft has officially stepped down from the municipal board for ‘health reasons,’ and his legal team has signaled they won't pursue any further legal challenges against our operations.”

Dominic didn't turn around immediately. He reached up, adjusting the cuffs of his bespoke charcoal suit.

“And Serena?” Dominic asked.

“She and her father packed their bags last night,” Marcus said, a faint smirk playing at the corner of his mouth. “Last flight out to London. Her social circle has already started distancing themselves. By tomorrow, the tabloids will have moved on to the next scandal.”

Dominic finally turned, walking slowly back toward his desk. He looked down at the empty spot where the gunmetal ring had rested before he tossed it to Croft.

The space was bare. Clean. Uncluttered.

“Good,” Dominic said simply.

He sat down in his high-backed leather chair, pulling the new operational manifests toward him. The syndicate was secure. The lanes were clear. The empire had weathered the storm and emerged harder, sharper, and completely untouchable.

There was no room for sentimentality in a world built on blood and steel.

“Anything else, Marcus?” Dominic asked, picking up a heavy silver pen.

“Just one thing, boss,” Marcus said, pausing near the door with a knowing glint in his eye. “The charity board dinner is scheduled for Friday night. The committee called asking if you’ll still be attending—and whether you’ll be bringing a plus-one.”

Dominic looked down at his left hand. The ring finger was bare, free of any metal, any burden, any false weight.

A faint, genuine smile touched the corners of his mouth.

“Tell them,” Dominic said, his eyes locking onto the document before him with absolute authority, “that I’ll be attending alone. And I won't be needing a plus-one to run this city.”
