Chapter 5 - The Croft Estate

The iron gates of the Croft estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, loomed like the portcullis of a medieval fortress against the predawn sky. But tonight, the grand ironwork offered no protection against the rolling storm of black SUVs that pulled up in tight, synchronized formation, blocking both the entrance and the winding private drive.

Inside the sprawling neo-classical mansion, Robert Croft sat in his mahogany-paneled study, a crystal tumbler of scotch half-full on his desk, his phone clutched tightly in his hand.

His phone buzzed violently against the wood.

Croft snatched it up, hitting accept. “Lev? Report. Did the transfer go through? Have the Russians secured the docks?”

There was silence on the other end of the line—a heavy, static-laced silence before a strange, flat voice spoke.

“Lev Berman is currently indisposed, Mr. Croft,” a voice replied. It wasn't Lev. It was Silas.

Croft’s heart hammered against his ribs. “What? Who is this? Where is Lev?”

“Lev is learning the value of keeping his hands to himself,” Silas replied coldly. “Much like you are about to learn the value of staying out of family business.”

Before Croft could scream an order into the receiver, the heavy mahogany doors of his private study exploded inward.

The reinforced wood splintered into a million jagged shards as the deadbolts gave way under a brutal, coordinated kick. Two of Dominic’s armed enforcers poured into the room, their weapons instantly trained on Croft’s chest.

And right behind them walked Dominic Thorne.

He didn't wear an overcoat now. His sleeves were rolled up slightly to his forearms, revealing the lean, corded muscle of a man who had fought his way to the top of the food chain and intended to stay there.

Robert Croft stumbled backward out of his leather executive chair, knocking his crystal tumbler crashing to the floor, amber liquid soaking into the Persian rug.

“You—you’re out of your mind!” Croft splurged, his face flushing a furious, panicked purple as he clutched the edge of his desk. “You can’t just break into a federal official’s private residence! My contacts in the state department will have you locked away in a federal penitentiary before sunrise!”

Dominic walked slowly toward the desk, his heavy footsteps echoing across the marble flooring of the study. He didn't say a word at first. He simply reached down, picked up Croft’s desk phone, and tossed it casually against the wall, where it shattered into useless plastic and wires.

“Your contacts in the state department, Robert, are currently answering my phone calls,” Dominic said smoothly, leaning his palms against the mahogany surface just as he had done in his own office hours earlier.

“That’s impossible,” Croft gasped, sweating profusely now. “I funded their campaigns!”

“And I fund their retirements,” Dominic corrected softly.

From the doorway, Serena appeared, wrapped in a silk bathrobe, her hair disheveled, her eyes wide with absolute horror as she stared past the guards at Dominic.

“Daddy!” she cried out, rushing into the study. “What is happening? Why are these animals in our house?”

Dominic finally shifted his dark, unblinking gaze toward his former fiancée.

“Your father thought he could play chess with a man who owns the board, Serena,” Dominic said, his voice cutting through the panic in the room like a razor. “He thought forty million dollars in liquid capital could buy back his dignity after you disgraced yourself at my table.”

“You humiliated me!” Serena screamed, pointing a trembling finger at his chest. “You threw me out like trash over a spilled cup of coffee! You made me a laughingstock to every woman in Manhattan!”

Dominic stepped closer to her, his sheer presence forcing her to shrink back a fraction of an inch despite her fury.

“I didn't throw you out because of the coffee, Serena,” Dominic said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. “I threw you out because I saw what you are when you think nobody of consequence is watching. You are cruel to the weak. You are greedy for power you didn't earn. And in my world, a woman who treats human lives like disposable objects has no place standing beside me.”

Croft, finding a sudden surge of desperate rage, lunged toward a hidden drawer in his desk where a silver-plated revolver rested.

His fingers had barely grazed the metal handle when the barrel of Silas’s rifle cracked sharply across his knuckles, sending a sickening crunch of bone echoing through the study.

Croft shrieked, clutching his broken hand to his chest and collapsing back into his chair in a heap of tears and agony.

Dominic didn't even glance down at the bleeding man. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the brushed gunmetal ring—the very ring Serena had chosen for him in the Hamptons—and dropped it onto the center of Croft’s bloody desk.

The metal landed with a dull, heavy thud.

“Keep it,” Dominic said quietly. “It matches your family's legacy. Hollow, cold, and worthless.”
