Chapter 4 - The Jailhouse Confrontation

Against the strong advice of my attorney, I drove to the county detention center later that week to look my mother in the eye one last time.
I needed to hear her explain why she had tried to ruin the life of her only son.
I sat in the dreary, grey visitor's room, staring through the thick plexiglass partition until the guards escorted her in.
Eleanor wore a bright orange jumpsuit that completely stripped away her usual air of arrogance and superiority.
Her hair was a messy, unkempt tangle, and she glared at me with absolute venom as she picked up the heavy black telephone receiver.
"You ungrateful little brat," she spat immediately, bypassing any form of greeting.
"I gave you life, I raised you, and this is how you repay your mother?"
"You stole Leo's college fund, took out credit cards in Clara's name, and tried to steal the roof over our heads," I replied coldly, keeping my voice dangerously low.
"I was securing my future!" she yelled, slamming her fist against the thick glass.
"You were wasting all your money on that useless wife of yours, and I deserve compensation for everything I sacrificed to raise you."
"Clara is the mother of your grandson, the woman I chose to spend my life with, and you treated her like a slave," I fired back.
"She deserved it for thinking she was equal to me in my own son's house," Eleanor sneered, showing absolutely zero remorse for her actions.
Hearing her justify her cruelty made something permanently snap inside my chest.
Any lingering trace of familial love or guilt I had been harboring completely evaporated in that exact moment.
"You are no longer my mother," I said firmly, staring directly into her cold, greedy eyes.
"I have handed over all the bank statements, the forged documents, and Derek's full written confession to the district attorney."
Eleanor's smug expression finally faltered, replaced by a sudden, flashing panic.
"You wouldn't dare send your own mother to federal prison, Julian," she stammered, her voice trembling slightly.
"Watch me," I whispered into the receiver before slamming it back onto the hook.
I stood up from the metal stool and walked away, ignoring her muffled screams as she pounded frantically against the glass.
Stepping out of the prison into the bright Texas sunlight, I took a deep breath of fresh air.

For the first time in my entire life, I felt completely free from the suffocating grip of her manipulation.
I got back into my car and drove home to my real family, ready to face whatever legal battles lay ahead.
