Chapter 2 - The Perfect Facade Crumbles

Julian carried Mia into the parlor. The contrast between the kitchen and this room was sickening. The air smelled of cinnamon and expensive pine. His mother, Eleanor, was adjusting a velvet bow on the tree, while his sister, Sarah, was scrolling through her camera roll, laughing with her perfect, blonde daughters.
"Oh, Julian! You're finally out of the kitchen," Eleanor trilled, not looking up. "Did you get yourself a drink? Come, we’re about to open the second round of gifts."
"Why was my daughter washing the dishes?" Julian’s voice cut through the holiday music like a blade.
The laughter stopped. Sarah looked up from her phone, blinking in feigned innocence. Eleanor froze, her hand still resting on a golden ornament.
"Don't be dramatic, Julian," Sarah sighed, waving a manicured hand. "Mia volunteered. She wanted to be helpful. You know how she is, always eager to please."
"She’s eight years old, Sarah!" Julian roared, causing his nieces to jump. He felt Mia bury her face in his neck, and he immediately lowered his voice, though the fury in it only thickened. "She told me exactly what you said. That she didn't fit the 'family aesthetic' for the photos."
Eleanor sighed deeply, the sound of a woman inconvenienced. "Julian, darling, you have to understand. We hired a very prestigious magazine photographer for the holiday spread. Your sister and I just wanted a cohesive look. Mia's dress was... well, it clashed with the tartans. And let's be honest, she doesn't exactly share the Sterling features. We just thought it would be easier if she stayed busy elsewhere for an hour."
Julian stared at the woman who raised him. He saw the cold calculation in her eyes, the utter lack of empathy. They didn't see a child. They saw a prop that didn't fit their picture-perfect Southern Gothic narrative.
"She is my daughter. That makes her a Sterling," Julian stated, his voice laced with venom.
"Biologically speaking, Julian—" Sarah began with a sneer.
"Say one more word, Sarah, and I swear to God, I will financially gut your husband's startup so fast you'll be selling those tartans at a pawn shop," Julian threatened.

Sarah’s mouth snapped shut. Her husband’s company survived entirely on Julian’s venture capital funding.
Julian turned to his mother. "I'm packing our things. We are leaving. And until you realize that Mia is a thousand times the Sterling you will ever be, you are dead to me."
