Chapter 8 - Infiltrating the Lion's Den

The freezing, harsh wind whipped violently off the dark river as we navigated the small, battered boat toward a secluded, overgrown dock on the distant Manhattan side.

We were completely shivering, physically exhausted, and severely traumatized, but the fiery, burning desire for absolute justice kept our frozen blood pumping.

"We still possess the original flash drive, but without a massive, public platform to instantly broadcast the encrypted files, Thorne will easily bury the truth," Hayes stated grimly, tying off the heavy mooring line.

I looked across the glittering, illuminated skyline of the massive city, my eyes locking onto the towering, aggressively lit skyscraper where the lavish charity gala was actively taking place.

"We are not going to the police, because Thorne undeniably owns half the corrupt precinct," I said, a dangerous, new resolve suddenly hardening my terrified voice.

"We are going straight to the gala, and we are going to expose him entirely in front of the entire world."

Hayes looked at me as if I had completely lost my mind, wiping a thick smear of dark blood and black soot from his severely battered forehead.

"That building is currently a heavily fortified fortress completely swarming with Vanguard's elite security teams, we will never simply walk through the front door," he argued fiercely.

"We don't need to walk through the front door," Leo interjected quietly, pulling a heavily creased, slightly damp piece of expensive cardstock from his deep backpack.

It was the VIP gold-embossed invitation directly from Thorne's office, granting us full, unrestricted access to the private service elevators reserved exclusively for the honored Gold Star families.

Hayes stared at the golden ticket, a slow, highly dangerous smile spreading across his weathered, war-torn face.

"It is an incredibly suicidal, incredibly foolish plan," the old soldier muttered, checking the remaining ammunition firmly loaded in his stolen weapon.

"It is exactly the kind of utterly reckless, brilliant strategy your husband would have eagerly proposed."

We spent the next agonizing hour carefully cleaning ourselves up in a grimy, public restroom, desperately trying to make ourselves look slightly less like hunted, desperate fugitives.

I smoothed out my simple black dress, desperately trying to project the image of a dignified, grieving widow instead of a terrified, desperate mother fighting for her life.

When we finally arrived at the massive, heavily guarded glass doors of the towering Vanguard building, my heart was loudly hammering violently in my dry throat.

Two massive, heavily armed security guards clad in extremely expensive tuxedos stepped aggressively forward, thoroughly blocking our intended path to the private elevators.

"Can I see your official credentials, please?" the taller guard demanded coldly, his sharp eyes intensely scanning our slightly disheveled, nervous appearances.

I handed over the golden VIP invitation with a completely fake, incredibly forced smile, silently praying that they had not yet been thoroughly alerted to our recent, violent escape.

The guard slowly ran the specialized barcode under a glowing red scanner, the excruciating silence stretching out into absolute, agonizing eternity.

The small machine emitted a loud, cheerful green beep, and the heavily armed guard immediately stepped back, opening the velvet ropes with a polite, highly deceptive nod.

We had successfully breached the heavily guarded gates, but we were now voluntarily walking directly into the very center of the absolute worst danger imaginable.
