Chapter 2 - The Target on Our Backs

Panic, cold and sharp as a shattered mirror, sliced through my veins at the General's terrifying revelation.

I instinctively reached out and grabbed the silver medallion around Leo's neck, my fingers tracing the familiar, worn edges of the saint's protective image.

"This is just a cheap religious medal," I stammered, frantically examining the piece of metal I had kissed every night before going to sleep.

"It is a highly sophisticated, military-grade micro-storage drive completely encased in a silver alloy shell," Hayes corrected, pulling us toward a dimly lit service corridor away from the main concourse.

"Marcus had a specialized engineer forge it secretly in the base camp just hours before our final, fateful patrol."

Leo looked down at his chest, his eyes wide with a mixture of absolute awe and sheer, unadulterated terror.

"So the bad guys want to hurt us to get dad's medal?" he asked, his youthful innocence suddenly replaced by the harsh reality of our new, dangerous existence.

"They will stop at absolutely nothing, son," Hayes warned solemnly, checking his surroundings with the practiced paranoia of a hunted man.

Suddenly, a massive, broad-shouldered man in a dark suit bumped aggressively into me, his cold, dead eyes locking onto my face for a fraction of a second.

The General instantly stepped between us, using his walking stick not as a support, but as a subtle, defensive barrier against the looming stranger.

"Keep moving, do not look back, and head immediately for the subway tunnels," Hayes commanded in a harsh whisper that commanded absolute, unquestioning obedience.

We blended into the massive, surging wave of afternoon commuters, our footsteps echoing loudly over the chaotic announcements of departing trains.

My mind was racing a million miles a minute, desperately trying to comprehend how a simple charity gala trip had spiraled into a deadly, high-stakes espionage thriller.

"The charity event you are attending tonight is sponsored by Vanguard Global Security, the exact same private military company that ordered the hit on Marcus," Hayes revealed as we scanned our metro cards.

I gasped aloud, realizing that the incredibly generous invitation to honor Gold Star families had been an elaborate, cruel trap carefully laid to lure us out of Chicago.

They had been watching us all along, waiting for the perfect moment to isolate us and reclaim the damning evidence of their treasonous crimes.

As we boarded a crowded downtown subway car, I caught a terrifying glimpse of three men in matching dark suits aggressively pushing through the turnstiles behind us.

The doors slid shut with a mechanical hiss just as the lead pursuer reached the platform, his fist slamming violently against the reinforced glass window.

We were officially on the run, hunted by ruthless killers, with nothing but an old soldier and a child's necklace to protect us from complete destruction.
