Chapter 9 - Checkmate in the Fog

“You really stepped in it this time, Moretti,” Blake sneered, attempting to hide his nervous tremor behind a mask of arrogance.

Adrian walked forward at a measured pace, stopping ten feet away from the man who had tormented the mother of his child.

“Your bosses are not coming to back you up, Blake,” Adrian stated calmly, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal shipping containers.

Blake forced a harsh laugh.

“You’re bluffing,” he spat. “They need me to wash their money.”

Adrian tossed the black leather book onto the damp concrete between them.

Blake’s smug expression vanished instantly, his face draining of all color as he recognized the hidden ledger.

“I gave them a copy of the accounts,” Adrian explained, watching the rat finally realize he was trapped in the maze. “They know you skimmed three million dollars last year to pay off your own gambling debts.”

Panic seized Blake’s features as he frantically looked around the empty docks, expecting assassins to emerge from the shadows.

Desperation making him reckless, Blake drew a hidden pistol from his waistband, aiming it directly at Adrian’s chest.

But before Blake could even pull the trigger, the heavy, metallic sound of fifty assault rifles racking simultaneously echoed through the fog.

Adrian’s men emerged from the rooftops of the containers, every single weapon trained precisely on Blake’s head.

“Drop it,” Adrian commanded, his voice vibrating with absolute authority.

Blake’s hand shook violently, the pistol slipping from his sweaty grip and clattering harmlessly onto the concrete.

Suddenly, from the darkness behind Blake, three black sedans rolled into the clearing, bearing the license plates of the New York syndicate.

The cartel had come to collect their traitor.

“No, please!” Blake begged, falling to his knees as heavy-set men stepped out of the sedans.

Adrian turned his back on Blake, walking away without a single ounce of pity as the syndicate men dragged the screaming coward into the darkness.

Blake Cavanaugh’s reign of terror was officially over, completely dismantled by the very empire he had sought to manipulate.
