Chapter 5 - Blood in the Snow

Two days later, Mara insisted on attending her scheduled ultrasound appointment at a private clinic in the city.
Adrian refused to let her go alone, sending two armored SUVs and four of his most trusted men to guard her every step.
The clinic was quiet, the hum of the ultrasound machine filling the dark room as Mara listened to the rapid, strong heartbeat of her baby.
Tears of relief pricked her eyes, but the moment of peace was violently shattered by the sound of breaking glass in the waiting room.
Heavy, suppressed gunfire echoed down the sterile white hallway.
Mara’s bodyguard, a giant of a man named Elias, instantly shoved her to the linoleum floor, shielding her body with his own.
“Stay down, ma'am!” Elias roared, drawing a heavy pistol from his shoulder holster as the clinic door burst open.
Two men in ski masks poured into the room, their weapons raised, clearly sent by Blake to reclaim his property.
Elias fired twice, dropping the first attacker, but a bullet grazed his shoulder, sending him stumbling backward.
Mara didn't scream; instead, she grabbed the heavy metal base of an IV stand and swung it with all her might into the second attacker's knees.
The man howled in pain, dropping his weapon just as a tall figure stepped through the ruined doorway.
Adrian had arrived, his charcoal coat billowing behind him like a storm cloud, his eyes burning with lethal fury.
He didn't hesitate, raising his weapon and firing a single, precise shot that ended the threat permanently.
The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the sound of Mara’s ragged breathing.
Adrian dropped his weapon and fell to his knees beside her, his hands frantically searching her body for any sign of injury.

“I’m okay,” she choked out, grabbing his shaking hands to steady him. “Adrian, I’m okay.”
He pulled her against his chest, burying his face in her hair as he realized how close he had come to losing his entire world.
