Chapter 4 - The Panicked Boardroom

By midnight, the top floor of the Sterling Global tower downtown was a scene of absolute, chaotic devastation. Despite it being a national holiday, twelve senior executives, three corporate attorneys, and Julian’s primary PR team had been dragged into the glass-walled boardroom.
Julian paced the length of the mahogany table, his custom Italian suit jacket thrown over a chair, his silk tie loosened around his collar. His face was slick with sweat, his eyes wild as he screamed into a speakerphone.
"What do you mean you can't override the freeze?!" Julian roared, slamming his fist onto the polished wood. "I am the majority shareholder! I have two billion dollars in liquid capital sitting in that master account! Wire the funds to the offshore holding firm right now!"
"Mr. Sterling, I am trying to explain to you," the trembling voice of the bank’s vice president of global security crackled over the line. "This is not a standard administrative hold. Your accounts have been locked by an external biometric override tag coded directly into the Federal Reserve’s automated clearing house. We literally cannot access the ledger. The system is registering your corporate identity as Deceased/Null."
"That’s impossible!" Julian screamed, grabbing the phone base and throwing it across the room. It shattered against the glass wall, sending plastic fragments raining down onto the plush carpet.
At the far end of the table, Arthur Vance—Julian’s senior legal counsel—sat with his head buried in his hands. He looked up, his face gray with exhaustion and mounting terror.
"Julian," Arthur said quietly. "It gets worse."
Julian spun around, his chest heaving. "What? What else could possibly happen?"
Arthur slid a laptop across the table. On the screen was a live feed of the nation’s leading financial news network. The breaking news ticker scrolling at the bottom read: STERLING GLOBAL UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION FOR MASSIVE OFFSHORE FRAUD AND CAMPAIGN BRIBERY.
"An anonymous source just dumped thirty gigabytes of our internal emails, offshore wire receipts, and judicial campaign contributions directly to the investigative desks of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Department of Justice," Arthur said, his voice trembling. "They have everything, Julian. The shell companies in Panama. The private security payoffs to the local police precinct. Even the NDA settlements from your previous... domestic incidents."
Eleanor Sterling, who had insisted on riding downtown with her son, let out a sharp, breathless gasp from the corner of the room. "Julian! Do something! Call Robert! Call the District Attorney right now and tell him to quash the subpoenas!"

"Robert isn't answering his phone, Mother!" Julian snarled, his carefully constructed millionaire veneer peeling away to reveal the terrified, entitled boy beneath. "Nobody is answering! Our credit lines are dead, the board members are already tendering their resignations, and the police chief just blocked my number!"
He grabbed the edge of the mahogany table, his knuckles turning white as he stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering city skyline he had once claimed to own. For the first time in his thirty-four years of life, Julian Sterling realized he was entirely prey.
