Chapter 15 - A New Legacy (Conclusion)

A year later, the crisp November wind whipped through the Chicago cemetery as I stood before a massive marble headstone.
Arthur Sterling. Loving Father, Devoted Grandfather, Visionary.
I placed a bouquet of white lilies at the base of the stone. "We did it, Grandpa," I whispered into the quiet air.
Sterling Industries had completely transformed. I had liquidated Robert’s corrupt real estate holdings and poured the capital into medical research and debt relief programs for low-income families. The Elias Sterling Foundation had already paid off the medical debts of over ten thousand people—people just like the paramedic I used to be, who were drowning in a system designed to break them.
My mother and Robert had been convicted and sentenced to life without parole. Victoria was working as a waitress in a diner in New Jersey, and Julian was in a state-mandated rehab facility. They had written me several letters begging for money, but I returned them all unopened. You don't invite vipers back into your house after you've finally cured the venom.
Thomas stood a few yards away, keeping a respectful distance, his eyes constantly scanning the perimeter. He was completely healed and sharper than ever.
I reached into the breast pocket of my tailored navy suit—the exact style Grandpa used to wear. I pulled out a framed piece of paper. It was the original $10 million check from that fateful Thanksgiving dinner. The check that had started the war. The check that had saved my life.
I gently placed the framed check resting against the marble headstone.

"You told me it was an escape," I said softly to the grave. "But it was a lot more than that. It was a beginning."
I stood there for a few more moments, finding peace in the silence. I wasn't the broken, exhausted kid hiding in the corner of the dining room anymore. I had found my footing. I buttoned my coat, turned my back on the graveyard, and walked toward the waiting car.
