Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Awakening

Monday morning at Kensington Towers arrived with the subtle, intimidating hum of extreme wealth. The sixty-story glass monolith dominated the financial district, its polished marble lobby swarming with tailored executives and visiting diplomats. At precisely 8:30 AM, a matte-black executive SUV pulled up to the private curb.
When the rear doors opened, Arthur Kensington stepped out first, leaning lightly on his cane. Behind him emerged Julian Vance. He wasn't wearing a mechanic’s jumpsuit today, but he hadn't let Arthur dress him in a bespoke five-thousand-dollar suit either. Julian wore a clean, well-fitted charcoal blazer, a white collared shirt, and dark trousers. His posture was straight, his shoulders broad from years of manual labor, and his jaw was set with quiet, unshakeable resolve. Holding his hand was Toby, wearing his school uniform, clutching his backpack with wide, nervous eyes.
"Head up, buddy," Julian murmured to his son, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze. "We don't look down for anybody."
As they crossed the lobby, the turnstiles were abruptly blocked by Richard Kensington and three senior partners from the acquisitions division. Richard’s face was a mask of professional hostility.
"Arthur," Richard said smoothly, stepping directly into the path of the elevators. "We need to talk. The executive board has been fielding calls from shareholders all morning regarding the rumors from the party on Sunday. Bringing a civilian—and a child—onto the executive floor violates safety and non-disclosure protocols."
Arthur didn't even slow his pace. "Step aside, Richard."
"I am the Vice President of this Consortium," Richard insisted, raising his voice slightly to draw the attention of the surrounding lobby staff. "I have a fiduciary responsibility to protect this company from unauthorized infiltration. You cannot simply walk a mechanic into the boardroom and expect—"
"Security," Arthur said softly.
Two burly, armed private security contractors who had been shadowing Arthur instantly stepped forward, physically wedging their shoulders between Richard and the elevator bank.
"Mr. Kensington has requested clear passage," the lead guard said, his hand resting casually near his utility belt.
Richard flushed a violent shade of magenta, stepping back as the elevator doors slid open. Arthur gestured for Julian and Toby to step inside first. Before the polished steel doors closed, Arthur turned around to face his grandson-in-law.
"You speak of fiduciary responsibility, Richard?" Arthur’s voice was razor-thin. "We are holding an all-hands executive committee meeting in fifteen minutes. I suggest you attend. And bring your divisional accounting ledgers for the last three fiscal quarters. My new Executive Vice President of Oversight is going to want to take a look under the hood of your department."

As the doors closed, sealing Julian, Toby, and Arthur inside the private lift, Toby looked up at his father. "Dad? What does 'under the hood' mean in a fancy building like this?"
Julian smiled faintly, resting a hand on his son’s shoulder. "It means the same thing it means at the shop, Toby. It means we’re going to find out why the engine is making a rattling noise, and then we’re going to pull out the broken parts."
