Chapter 10 - The Gala of Truth

The annual Kensington Foundation Charity Gala, held in the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel, was the premier event of the Chicago autumn social season. For thirty years, Beatrice Kensington had reigned as the undisputed queen of the evening, organizing the guest lists, dictating the seating charts, and basking in the adoration of the city's political and financial elite.

This year, however, the atmosphere in the ballroom was charged with an electric, dangerous tension. The rumors of the trust restructuring, the public scandal at the school, and the ongoing audit had created a divide among the five hundred guests in black tie and evening gowns. Beatrice and Richard stood near the crystal champagne fountain, desperately trying to project an aura of control, though their smiles were brittle and their eyes darted nervously toward the entrance every few seconds.

At 8:30 PM, the double brass doors of the ballroom opened, and the room fell silent.

Arthur Kensington entered first, looking regal and formidable in his classic tuxedo. On his right arm walked Clara, stunning in emerald silk, and on his left walked Julian Vance. Julian wore a custom-tailored midnight-blue tuxedo that Arthur had ordered for him; he looked every inch the powerful corporate executive, carrying himself with an effortless, grounded confidence that no money could buy. Behind them walked little Toby, looking sharp in a miniature tuxedo of his own.

As the Kensington party moved toward the stage, Richard stepped into their path, his face flushed with wine and desperation.

"Arthur, stop this right now," Richard hissed under his breath, leaning in close so the surrounding mayors and CEOs wouldn't hear. "If you take that stage and publicly announce Julian’s appointment, you will shatter investor confidence. Our stock price will drop ten points at the opening bell tomorrow. We can settle this quietly. Give me my division, let Beatrice keep her board seats, and we’ll drop the competency lawsuit."

Arthur paused, looking at Richard with an expression of pure, unadulterated pity. "You still think this is a negotiation, Richard? You still think you have chips on the table?"

Arthur brushed past him, walking up the stairs to the main stage and stepping to the podium. The microphone feedback hummed briefly as five hundred faces turned upward to watch the patriarch.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Arthur spoke, his voice steady and clear, commanding total silence. "For over half a century, the Kensington Consortium has built skyscrapers, hospitals, and communities across this nation. But buildings are made of steel and concrete; a legacy is made of character."

Arthur gestured toward the front table where Julian, Clara, and Toby sat.

"There has been much speculation in the press recently regarding the future leadership of our enterprise," Arthur continued. "Tonight, I am putting those rumors to rest permanently. I am introducing to you the new Executive Vice President and future Chief Executive Officer of the Kensington Real Estate Consortium—Julian Vance."

A ripple of applause started at the front tables and rapidly spread across the ballroom, growing into a thunderous standing ovation as institutional bankers and city leaders recognized which way the wind was blowing.

Richard, standing near the stage, lost his temper completely. He lunged toward the microphone, pushing past a waiter. "He’s a fraud!" Richard shouted over the applause, pointing at Julian. "He’s a South Side mechanic who manipulated an old man! He has no legal authority to run a public corporation!"

Before Richard could reach the steps of the stage, two men in dark suits stepped out from behind the velvet curtains. It wasn't private security this time. One of the men pulled a gold badge from his breast pocket, flashing it directly in Richard’s face while the other handed him a thick white legal document.

"Mr. Richard Kensington?" the federal process server said clearly, his voice carrying through the front rows of the ballroom as the applause died down into stunned gasps. "You are hereby served with a Federal Grand Jury Subpoena and a Formal Notice of Employment Termination for Cause, issued by the Kensington Consortium Board of Directors. You are ordered to surrender your corporate keys, access cards, and company phones immediately."

Beatrice, standing a few feet away, dropped her champagne flute onto the marble floor, where it shattered into a hundred glittering pieces—a perfect, physical reflection of her high-society empire collapsing in front of the entire city.
