Chapter 7 - The Depths of Betrayal

The legal fallout was swift, brutal, and incredibly public.

Vanessa’s mugshot was plastered across the front page of every local business journal in the city.

She looked absolutely horrific without her professional makeup artist and expensive lighting.

Her wealthy husband filed for a fast-track divorce the very next day, utterly desperate to protect his own assets from the federal freeze.

He immediately changed the locks on their massive suburban mansion and restricted her access to their shared banking accounts.

She was left with absolutely nothing but a court-appointed public defender who was completely outmatched by the federal prosecutors.

My father remained in the hospital for three days, recovering from a mild stress-induced cardiac event.

When he was finally discharged, he returned to an empty house and a completely frozen bank account.

The federal government had seized his entire personal estate to cover the massive debts Vanessa had secretly accrued.

He tried to call me a dozen times a day, leaving long, weeping voicemails begging for my forgiveness.

I blocked his number without a second thought.

I was too busy building my new life to waste time repairing his broken one.

I officially signed my executive contract with Sterling Corporation, securing a massive seven-figure salary and full stock options.

My first executive action was to hire Marisol as my personal director of operations, doubling her previous salary.

We moved into a gorgeous new corner office downtown, overlooking the beautiful Chicago skyline.

One afternoon, a sharp knock echoed through my office door.

Marcus walked in, wearing a ridiculously expensive tailored suit and carrying a bottle of vintage champagne.

“We have a very important legal update,” he announced, pouring two glasses of the bubbling liquid.

“Vanessa’s defense attorney tried to offer the prosecutors a plea deal this morning.”

“She offered to testify against your father, claiming he masterminded the entire embezzlement scheme.”

I took a slow sip of my champagne, shaking my head in pure disbelief.

“She is throwing her own father under the bus to save herself,” I laughed softly.

“There truly is no honor among thieves.”

“The best part is that the prosecutors rejected her pathetic deal,” Marcus grinned.

“They already have an airtight case against both of them thanks to the documents you provided.”

“They are both going to serve serious federal time.”

I looked out the massive glass window, watching the bustling city move far below me.

The scared, compliant daughter who used to apologize for everything was officially dead and gone.

In her place stood a formidable, powerful woman who would never be pushed to the shadows again.
