Chapter 6 - The Turning Tide

The officers spoke with Marcus for exactly three minutes.
When the senior officer handed my phone back, he looked at my father with deep, intense pity.
“Sir, my captain has just been informed that the FBI is currently raiding the corporate offices of Bennett Office Supply,” the officer said flatly.
My father’s cane slipped from his grasp and clattered loudly against the wooden porch.
“What are you talking about?” he gasped, clutching his chest.
“Your attorney, Mr. Vance, handed over a massive cache of offshore banking records to the federal authorities this morning,” the officer explained.
“Your daughter Vanessa is currently being taken into federal custody for wire fraud, embezzlement, and filing a false police report.”
The color completely drained from my father’s face as his knees finally buckled beneath him.
He collapsed onto the porch stairs, gasping for air like a fish pulled out of water.
I did not reach out to help him.
I stood perfectly still, watching the empire of lies crumble into absolute dust.
The officers called for a medical unit just as a precaution, given his known heart condition.
As the paramedics loaded him into the back of an ambulance, he looked at me with tears streaming down his face.
“I am sorry, Claire,” he whispered, his voice broken and hollow.
“No, you are not,” I replied, my voice steady and completely emotionless.
“You are just incredibly sorry that you finally got caught.”
I watched the ambulance drive away, its red lights flashing against the gray morning sky.
I walked back inside my house and locked the door, feeling lighter than I had in over a decade.
Ethan and Sophie were sitting at the kitchen table, eating warm chocolate chip pancakes.
“Who was at the door, Mom?” Sophie asked, her innocent eyes wide with curiosity.
“Just the garbage collectors, sweetie,” I smiled warmly, kissing the top of her head.
“They were just taking out the trash.”
Later that afternoon, Marcus called me with an incredibly lucrative update.
Sterling Corporation was still highly interested in acquiring the core assets of Bennett Office Supply.
But they did not want to buy it from my disgraced father or my imprisoned sister.
“They want to buy it from the bankruptcy court,” Marcus explained, sounding incredibly smug.
“And Richard, the CEO, wants to offer you a massive consulting contract to restructure the entire company.”
“He said anyone who can systematically dismantle a corporate empire in under a week is exactly the kind of shark he needs on his board.”
I looked out my kitchen window, watching the autumn leaves fall gracefully from the trees.

“Tell Richard I accept his generous offer,” I replied.
“But my starting salary is completely non-negotiable.”
