The next few weeks were a masterclass in the destruction of a toxic family.
Mark tried to fight the divorce, hiring a sleazy discount lawyer to challenge the quitclaim deed and the Trust. But my mother’s estate lawyers were sharks who charged a thousand dollars an hour. They decimated Mark’s legal team in the first preliminary hearing. The judge not only upheld the quitclaim deed but also ordered Mark to pay my legal fees due to the overwhelming evidence of his financial fraud.
Since Mark was effectively homeless and broke, he had to move into Barbara’s cramped two-bedroom condo.
But the real fireworks came from David.
True to his word, his creditors came calling. Desperate and out of options, David tried to take out a second mortgage on Barbara’s condo to pay off his debts. But since his credit was ruined, he couldn't do it legally.
So, he forged his mother’s signature.
