Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Four months later, the morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of a beachfront villa overlooking the Atlantic Ocean—Gabriel’s coastal sanctuary. The gentle sound of crashing waves replaced the chaotic nightmares of my past.
I sat on a plush white sofa, rocking my two-week-old daughter, Maya, in my arms. She had a full head of dark hair and rosy, healthy cheeks. She was peaceful, thriving, and entirely untouched by the darkness that had once threatened her life.
Gabriel walked out onto the deck holding two mugs of tea, setting one down on the table beside me. He looked down at his niece, his hardened military features melting into a gentle, affectionate smile as Maya wrapped her tiny hand around his pinky finger.
"The final sentencing came through this morning," Gabriel said softly, leaning against the balcony railing.
"How long?" I asked, not looking up from Maya's sleeping face.
"Marcus got twenty-five years without possibility of parole at a maximum-security federal penitentiary," Gabriel replied, taking a sip of his tea. "Arthur and Barbara pleaded guilty to tax fraud and accessory to assault; they got seven years each, and their remaining assets were seized to pay your civil judgment. Lucas is doing three years of community supervision and working a minimum-wage job cleaning diners. They have nothing left."
I let out a long, deep breath. The Vance family was gone—erased from my world as thoroughly as if they had never existed. The millions of dollars recovered from Marcus’s embezzlement and the civil lawsuit had been placed into a secure trust fund for Maya’s future.
"Thank you, Gabriel," I whispered, looking up at my brother with tears of pure gratitude shining in my eyes. "You saved us. When I thought no one was coming... you were there."

Gabriel kneeled beside the sofa, gently kissing the top of Maya's head and then resting his hand on my shoulder—warm, strong, and protective.
"I will always be here, little sister," Gabriel said softly, the morning sunlight catching the proud smile on his face. "No one will ever hurt you or this little warrior again. Welcome home."
