Chapter 7 - The Final Straw

Four weeks passed in absolute silence, and Amelia was finally thirty-five weeks pregnant.

Her belly was massive, and the doctor said the baby could safely arrive any day now.

She had built a peaceful, beautiful routine in the penthouse.

But Ethan was entirely losing his mind in the silence.

He had hired a private investigator to track down her location.

When the investigator finally found the penthouse address, Ethan did not think twice.

He drove straight to the luxury building, his heart pounding with desperate hope.

He bypassed the front desk and waited for a resident to open the secure elevator.

When the doors opened on the penthouse floor, he marched straight to her door and knocked heavily.

Amelia was reading a book on the couch when she heard the loud banging.

She looked through the peephole and felt her blood turn completely to ice.

Ethan was standing there, holding a bouquet of her favorite white roses.

"Amelia, please open the door!" Ethan shouted, his voice muffled by the thick wood.

"I know you are in there, I just want to talk to you!"

Amelia stepped back, her heart hammering painfully against her ribs.

"Go away, Ethan, or I am calling the police!" she yelled back firmly.

"I am not leaving until you let me see you!" he yelled, banging his fist against the door again.

The sudden aggression in his voice sent a massive spike of adrenaline through her body.

She remembered the fear in the elevator, the feeling of being entirely trapped.

Suddenly, a massive wave of pain ripped through her lower abdomen.

It was so intense that she gasped out loud, dropping her book onto the floor.

She looked down and saw a pool of clear water soaking into her sweatpants.

Her water had just broken, brought on by the sudden, intense spike of stress.

"Ethan, stop it!" Amelia screamed, leaning heavily against the wall.

"You are scaring me, and my water just broke!"

The banging outside the door stopped completely.

"Amelia? Are you okay? Let me in, I can help you!" Ethan pleaded, genuine panic returning to his voice.

Amelia grabbed her phone from the counter with trembling hands.

She did not call Ethan, and she did not unlock the door.

Instead, she dialed Sarah's number, tears of pain and fear streaming down her face.

"Sarah, the baby is coming right now, and Ethan is outside my door," she cried.

"I am calling building security and an ambulance, do not let him in!" Sarah ordered fiercely.

Amelia slid down the wall, clutching her stomach as the first real contraction hit.

She was going to have this baby today, and Ethan was going to watch from the outside.
