Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

One year later, the sun was shining brightly over the city park.

Amelia sat on a checkered picnic blanket, laughing as little Leo chased a yellow butterfly.

He was a happy, healthy toddler, completely completely unaware of the drama surrounding his birth.

Amelia looked beautiful, her stress entirely gone, replaced by a confident, peaceful glow.

She had started a new career as a consultant, and her life was entirely her own.

"He is fast for a one-year-old," a deep, warm voice chuckled from behind her.

Amelia smiled as Noah walked over, carrying two iced coffees.

He sat down on the blanket beside her, his broad shoulders brushing gently against hers.

Noah had become a constant, reliable presence in their lives over the past year.

He never pushed her, never demanded anything, but he was always there when she needed a friend.

"He gets his speed from me," Amelia joked, taking a sip of the sweet coffee.

Across the park, parked under the shade of a large oak tree, sat a familiar black truck.

Ethan sat in the driver's seat, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly.

It was his weekend for supervised visitation, but he was early, watching from a distance.

He watched his ex-wife laugh with another man.

He watched the rookie firefighter pick up his son and spin him in the air, making Leo shriek with joy.

Ethan’s heart ached with a pain that he knew would never, ever go away.

He had made one terrible choice in a moment of panic, and it had cost him his entire universe.

Amelia glanced up and noticed the truck parked in the shadows.

She did not flinch, she did not look away, and she did not feel a single drop of sadness.

She simply turned back to Noah and smiled, feeling the warmth of the sun on her face.

She had survived the darkness, and she had built a beautiful new life in the light.

She was no longer waiting for anyone to save her.

She had saved herself, and she was finally, truly free.
