Chapter 5 - The Smear Campaign

By Wednesday, the suburban grapevine was on fire.

Marcus had taken to Facebook. He posted a carefully curated, black-and-white photo of us from a vacation years ago, accompanied by a lengthy, poetic caption. He wrote about the "challenges of marriage," about "mental health struggles," heavily implying that I had suffered a psychological break and kidnapped our daughter.

“Please pray for my wife,” the post read. “I just want her and my little girl home safely. I will stand by her through her illness, no matter what.”

The comments poured in. Hundreds of them. Neighbors, church members, and PTA moms praising him for his grace and offering to bring him casseroles. My own friends were texting me, confused and concerned, asking if I was "feeling okay."

I sat at Claire’s kitchen island, staring at the screen, my blood boiling. He was weaponizing everyone against me.

"Don't reply," Claire warned, tossing my phone into a drawer. "It's bait. He wants you to sound crazy."

"He's winning," I said, feeling the old, familiar suffocating weight press down on my chest. "He always wins."

"Not this time," Claire promised. "Let him build his little house of cards. The higher it gets, the harder it falls."
