Chapter 16 - Victoria’s Fall

The final nail in Victoria Sterling’s coffin wasn't hammered by a witness; it was delivered by forensic accounting.

As the afternoon session resumed, Marcus Holloway stood before the judge with a thick binder of financial documents retrieved by Julian’s corporate security team over the weekend.

“Your Honor, before you rule on the matter of guardianship, we must address the true motivation behind this petition,” Marcus said, projecting his voice so every journalist in the room could hear clearly. “Mrs. Victoria Sterling has presented herself to this court as a concerned grandmother attempting to rescue her grandchildren from a negligent father.”

Marcus opened the binder, pulling out a series of highlighted bank routing sheets.

“However, financial records subpoenaed from the Sterling Family Trust show that over the past twelve months, Mrs. Sterling made monthly deposits of ten thousand dollars into an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Vanguard Childcare Solutions.”

In the gallery, Victoria went rigid. Her face turned a sickly, mottled purple.

“That same shell company,” Marcus continued relentlessly, “was the sole financial entity paying Beatrice Miller’s private salary—a salary double what Mr. Vance was already paying her through the agency. Furthermore, three days after Sarah Vance passed away, Mrs. Sterling sent a private email to her Boston legal team.”

Marcus held up a printed document, reading aloud:

‘Julian is vulnerable. If we can document severe behavioral regression in the girls over the next year, we can petition King County Court for full medical guardianship. Once we control the children, we automatically control their thirty-percent inheritance block of Vance Enterprises voting stock. Ensure Beatrice understands her assignment: the children must appear entirely unsuited for public life.’

The courtroom exploded.

Reporters leaped to their feet. Spectators gasped in horror. Judge Holloway pounded her gavel repeatedly, her face dark with judicial rage.

“Order! Order in this court right now!” the judge bellowed, her voice cutting through the chaos.

At the petitioner’s table, Victoria Sterling tried to stand up, her hands shaking violently as she grabbed her lawyer's sleeve. “That is fabricated! That is illegally obtained corporate espionage! I am their grandmother!”

“You are a fraud, Mrs. Sterling,” Judge Holloway leaned over her elevated desk, her eyes blazing as she pointed her gavel directly at the aristocratic woman. “In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a more grotesque, calculated act of child endangerment disguised as family concern. You paid a woman to systematically abuse and terrorize your own infant granddaughters simply to secure voting shares in a tech corporation.”

Judge Holloway didn't even bother retreating to her chambers to write a formal opinion. She picked up her pen, signed the dismissal order with a sharp, aggressive slash of black ink, and looked out over the courtroom.

“The petitioner's motion for emergency guardianship is denied with prejudice,” Judge Holloway ruled loudly. “Furthermore, I am ordering the King County District Attorney’s office to open an immediate criminal investigation into Mrs. Victoria Sterling for conspiracy to commit child endangerment, fraud, and witness tampering. Bailiff, take Beatrice Miller back into federal custody immediately. This court stands adjourned!”
