Chapter 5 - The Park Ambush

Three days later, Sarah’s health had improved significantly under the care of Adrian's expensive private doctors.

The heavy fluid in her lungs had cleared, and her natural color had finally returned.

Adrian had kept his silent promise to the brave little girl.

He arrived at the hospital on a sunny Tuesday afternoon, wearing a casual sweater instead of his usual intimidating suit.

"Are you ready to go see the dogs, Mia?" Adrian asked, smiling warmly at the excited child.

Mia jumped up and down, holding onto the hem of his expensive cashmere sweater.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti!" Mia cheered happily.

They drove to Central Park in a massive, armored SUV, accompanied only by Marcus.

Adrian wanted Mia to have a normal, peaceful afternoon away from the terrifying reality of his world.

They walked slowly along the paved paths, watching dozens of golden retrievers chasing tennis balls in the green grass.

Mia was laughing hysterically, her innocent joy piercing straight through Adrian’s hardened, cynical heart.

For the first time in his violent life, Adrian actually felt genuine, unadulterated peace.

Suddenly, Marcus stepped firmly in front of Adrian, his hand reaching smoothly inside his jacket.

"Boss, we have a massive problem," Marcus whispered dangerously.

Four large men in heavy black leather jackets were walking aggressively toward them from the opposite end of the path.

Adrian recognized Vincent Falcone immediately, leading the pack of armed thugs with a wicked smirk.

"Well, well, well," Vincent sneered, pulling a suppressed pistol from his jacket.

"The great Adrian Moretti, playing babysitter in the park."

"Hand over the little brat, Adrian, and maybe we let you walk away with your life."

Adrian did not panic, nor did he beg for mercy.

He simply placed his large hand gently on Mia’s small, trembling shoulder.

"Close your eyes, Mia," Adrian instructed softly. "Do not open them until I tell you."

Mia obeyed instantly, squeezing her eyes shut and covering her ears.

Adrian looked up at Vincent, his eyes turning as cold and dark as a winter midnight.

"You have made the final mistake of your miserable life, Vincent," Adrian promised.

Before Vincent could even raise his weapon, Marcus drew his gun and fired two perfect shots.

Two of the Falcone thugs dropped violently to the grass, instantly neutralized.

Vincent screamed in panic, returning wild, completely inaccurate fire toward the armored men.

Adrian tackled Mia safely to the ground, shielding her tiny body completely with his own massive frame.

Marcus charged forward like an angry bull, disarming Vincent with a brutal strike to the jaw.

In less than twenty seconds, the terrifying ambush was completely over.

Adrian stood up slowly, brushing the dirt off his expensive sweater.

He picked Mia up gently, completely ignoring the bleeding men on the grass.

"You can open your eyes now, little one," Adrian whispered softly.

The war had officially begun, and Adrian was ready to burn the entire city to the ground.
