Chapter 8 - The Ambush

The convoy of armored black SUVs left the coastal estate under the cover of darkness.

Clara sat in the back of the heavily modified center vehicle, Dante strapped securely into a car seat beside her.

Vincenzo sat opposite them, an assault rifle resting casually across his knees, his eyes scanning the dark highway.

The rain was coming down in sheets, reducing visibility to almost nothing.

They were halfway to the city when the first explosion rocked the convoy.

The lead SUV burst into a ball of orange flame, flipping off the road into a muddy ditch.

Clara screamed, throwing her body entirely over Dante's car seat to shield him from the violent swerve of their vehicle.

"Keep your head down!" Vincenzo roared, kicking the passenger door open as their SUV skidded to a halt.

Gunfire erupted from the tree line, heavy caliber bullets pinging violently against the armored glass.

Vincenzo’s men poured out of the remaining vehicles, returning fire into the darkness.

Clara was hyperventilating, her hands clamped over Dante's ears to protect him from the deafening noise.

The baby was crying out, terrified by the sudden chaos and the smell of sulfur seeping into the cabin.

Suddenly, a masked figure appeared at the rear window, leveling a shotgun at the glass.

Before the attacker could pull the trigger, Vincenzo stepped into view.

He fired three rapid shots through the window, dropping the threat instantly.

He wrenched the door open, his suit soaked in rain, his eyes blazing with protective fury.

"Are you hurt?" he yelled over the sound of the gunfire.

May you like

Clara shook her head, tears streaming down her face as she clutched the baby.

"I've got you," Vincenzo promised, pulling them both out of the ruined vehicle and pushing them toward the backup extraction car.
