Chapter 9 - Blood and Water

“Luca, let me out!” I yelled, pulling at the door handle.

“Boss’s orders, Clara! Stay down!” Luca roared, firing his own weapon out the window to provide cover fire.

On the docks, Gabriel caught Silas’s wrist. With a primal roar, Gabriel twisted, snapping the bone. Silas screamed, dropping the knife. Gabriel didn't hesitate. He drove his knee into Silas’s chest, grabbed him by the throat, and held him over the edge of the rushing, freezing water of the lake.

“For Elena. For my children. And for Clara,” Gabriel snarled.

He didn't shoot him. He just let go. Silas fell backwards, screaming, into the icy, churning black water below, swallowed by the current and the darkness.

The remaining traitors dropped their weapons, falling to their knees to surrender. It was over. Gabriel Moretti had reclaimed his throne.

He stood up, panting, covered in blood and rain, and looked up at the SUV. He started walking toward me. I kicked the door open and ran to him, ignoring the bodies and the blood. I slammed into his chest, and he wrapped his arms around me, burying his face in my hair.

“It’s over,” he whispered. “We’re safe.”
