Chapter 3 - Into the Dark
The moment Julian gave the order, the entire estate plunged into absolute darkness. The architectural lighting, the glowing security feeds, the hum of the HVAC system—everything died at once.
Julian hadn't come alone. He had sent someone to the external utility box.
Three seconds later, the deep, rumbling growl of Elias's industrial backup generator kicked in, located in the reinforced basement. Emergency red lighting flooded the corridors, casting long, bloody shadows across the marble floors.
Elias didn't panic. He was a cardiothoracic surgeon; he had operated on patients when hospital grids failed. He knew how to compartmentalize fear. He backed away from the front door, sweeping the shotgun barrel across the foyer.
His radio crackled. It was Marta, calling from the subterranean cellar using the internal hardlined comms. "Dr. Thorne? We lost main power. The temperature down here is already dropping. Sam's breathing is becoming shallow again. He needs a hospital, Elias."
"I know, Marta," Elias replied quietly, keeping his eyes on the reinforced front door. "Keep him swaddled. Keep rubbing his chest. Do not come upstairs."
Outside, a deafening metallic snap echoed through the storm. The heavy steel pins of the front gate had sheared off under the continuous assault of the truck. The massive iron barriers swung inward, dragging through the snow. Julian’s truck roared onto the private driveway, its high beams sweeping across the front facade of the house.

Elias retreated deeper into the house, moving toward the kitchen. He knew the structural weak points of his own home. The front door was reinforced steel, but the heavy glass patio doors at the back, though shuttered, were vulnerable to a targeted breach.
He needed to level the playing field. Julian had hired muscle, weapons, and sheer brute force. But Elias had an intimate, unparalleled knowledge of human anatomy, and a house filled with chemical compounds. He wasn't going to fight like a soldier. He was going to fight like a surgeon.
