Chapter 10 - The Ambush

Elias slumped against the wine racks, exhaling a massive breath as Sam's color slowly returned. Maya ran over, hugging his leg tightly.

"You saved him," she whispered.

"I did," Elias said, checking his weapon. "Now lock this door. I'm going to finish this."

Elias climbed the concrete stairs back to the main level. But as he stepped into the hallway, a massive hand grabbed him by the throat, slamming him violently against the wall.

It was the mercenary he had shot at on the stairs. The man was bleeding heavily from his shoulder, but he was high on adrenaline and rage. He pinned Elias against the plaster, raising a heavy tactical combat knife, aiming straight for Elias's chest.

Elias couldn't reach his shotgun. His hands were pinned. The knife plunged downward.

Elias twisted violently at the last possible millisecond. The heavy blade missed his heart, sinking deeply into his left shoulder, slicing through muscle and scraping the collarbone.

Agony flared through Elias's entire body, but he didn't scream. He was intimately familiar with pain. He used his free right hand to reach down to his tactical belt, pulling a small, razor-sharp medical scalpel he always kept in his pocket.

With blinding speed, Elias drove the scalpel directly into the brachial artery of the mercenary's right arm.

The man screamed, dropping the knife as bright arterial blood sprayed across the wall. His arm went completely numb, the severed artery instantly neutralizing his ability to fight. Elias kicked his legs out from under him, sending the massive man crashing to the floor.

Elias pulled the combat knife out of his own shoulder, gritting his teeth against the searing pain. He pressed a heavy gauze pad to his wound, tying it off tight. He was bleeding badly, but he was alive. And Julian was the only one left.
