Chapter 15 - The Unraveling of Marcus Thorne

Midnight at Dry Dock 4 was a landscape of towering, rusted steel shipping containers, freezing Atlantic fog, and the eerie, rhythmic creaking of moored cargo ships bobbing in the harbor.

Tommy Callahan and twelve of his heaviest, automatic-weapon-toting enforcers crept through the labyrinth of shipping containers, utilizing the camera blind spots Marcus had provided on his hand-drawn map. Through their night-vision scopes, they spotted a black Cadillac Escalade parked near the edge of the pier, surrounded by three men in dark coats standing near an open maritime container.

“There they are,” Callahan whispered over his tactical radio, raising his suppressed submachine gun. “Take them all down. Leave nobody breathing.”

Callahan’s men stepped out from the shadows of the containers, opening fire in a deafening, coordinated barrage of automatic gunfire that illuminated the freezing harbor fog in blinding white flashes.

Thousands of rounds slammed into the black Escalade and the three men standing near the container.

But nobody screamed. Nobody fell to the pavement.

As the gunfire ceased and the smoke cleared, Callahan lowered his weapon, frowning in confusion. The three men standing by the container hadn't bled—they were heavy, steel-framed training dummies dressed in old wool overcoats, riddled with bullets. And the black Escalade was an empty, decommissioned shell vehicle with no engine block under the hood.

“What the hell is this?!” Callahan yelled, stepping forward onto the open pier. “It’s a trap! Fall back! Fall back right now!”

Before Callahan’s men could take two steps toward the exit lanes, the entire dry dock was suddenly flooded with the blinding, twenty-thousand-lumen glare of military-grade industrial floodlights mounted on the surrounding cranes.

From the tops of the shipping containers enclosing the pier, twenty of Gabriel Moretti’s elite tactical enforcers—led by Elias Russo, Paulie, and Dante—stood up in synchronized precision, their laser-sighted assault rifles trained directly onto the exposed Callahan mobsters below.

“Drop your weapons right now, Tommy!” Elias Russo’s voice boomed over a high-powered tactical megaphone from the crane platform. “You’re standing in a kill box! You have three seconds to put your guns on the asphalt before we turn this pier into a slaughterhouse! One! Two—”

“Drop them! Drop the guns!” Callahan screamed in absolute terror, throwing his submachine gun onto the wet concrete and raising his hands above his head as his twelve lieutenants immediately followed suit, dropping to their knees in surrender.

From the shadows of the main harbor control booth, Gabriel Moretti walked out onto the floodlit pier. He wore his heavy wool overcoat, his hands casually in his pockets, his sharp face entirely devoid of surprise as he approached the kneeling, trembling Irish mobster.

“You really thought Marcus Thorne had insider access to my shipping grids, Tommy?” Gabriel asked coldly, stopping five feet away from Callahan. “Thorne is a disbarred idiot who hasn't had access to a corporate server in two weeks. We fed those dry dock leases to his former law partner three days ago specifically to see which rodent he would run to in Charlestown.”

Callahan looked up, his face pale with dread. “Moretti... please. It was strictly business. The lawyer told us—”

“The lawyer is dead weight,” Gabriel interrupted coldly. “Your territory in Charlestown is being absorbed by my underboss as of midnight tonight. If I ever see your face, or the faces of any of your men, within five miles of Boston Harbor again, I won't bother setting a trap. I’ll just let Paulie handle the introductions. Get them out of here, Elias.”

As the disarmed, broken Callahan gang was herded into the back of tactical transport vans by Moretti’s men, Gabriel pulled his encrypted phone from his pocket, dialing his domestic security team at the penthouse.

“Elias,” Gabriel said as his underboss walked up alongside him on the wet pier. “Thorne wasn't with the Callahan hit squad tonight. He’s out there alone, and he’s out of options. Increase the perimeter guard at the pediatric hospital to double strength. He’s going to make a desperate move for Clara by dawn.”
