Chapter 10 - New Beginnings

One year later.

The Charleston estate had been completely renovated. The rotting doghouse had been burned to ashes, the magnolia tree surrounded by a massive, colorful wooden playground.

The sun was shining brightly as Elena sat on the patio, sipping a glass of iced tea.

The glass doors slid open, and a little boy ran out onto the grass.

Leo was unrecognizable from the skeletal, terrified creature she had found a year ago. His cheeks were round and flushed with health. His eyes were bright, filled with curiosity and joy. He was wearing a superhero t-shirt, clutching a toy airplane in his hand.

"Mama! Mama, look!" Leo shouted, his voice clear and strong.

Elena’s heart swelled with a love so fierce it took her breath away. The sound of his voice—a voice the doctors warned she might never hear—was the greatest victory of her entire life.

"I see it, my brave boy!" Elena laughed, opening her arms.

Leo ran across the grass and leaped into her lap, throwing his arms around her neck and burying his face in her shoulder. There was no flinching. No fear. Just pure, unadulterated trust.

Marcus walked out onto the patio, carrying a tray of sandwiches. He had formally accepted the position of Head of Security for Vance Logistics, becoming a permanent fixture in their lives.

"Company's profits are up twenty percent this quarter, boss," Marcus smiled, setting the tray down. "And the legal team finalized the name change. Julian's name is completely wiped from the records."

"Thank you, Marcus," Elena smiled, kissing the top of Leo's head.

She had survived the darkness of the covert world, and she had survived the unimaginable betrayal of her own family. She had walked through the fire and dragged her son out of the ashes.

Leo giggled, feeding a piece of his sandwich to a stray golden retriever puppy Elena had adopted for him the month before.

Elena watched them play. The past was dead and buried. The monsters were locked in cages of their own making.

And finally, after five long years, they were home.
