Chapter 6 - The Discovery

The legal war moved faster than I ever thought possible, fueled by my father's endless resources and David's mounting desperation.
Because of Margaret's recorded threats and the pending criminal charges against David, the judge granted me immediate, exclusive custody of Emma.
David was slapped with a restraining order so strict he couldn't legally come within five miles of my father's property.
But the real battle was happening in the digital shadows, where forensic accountants were tearing David's life apart.
I sat with Veronica in her glass-walled office downtown, reviewing the final financial autopsy.
"He was running a classic Ponzi scheme within his own real estate development firm," Veronica explained, pointing at a flowchart.
"He used new investors' money to pay off the old investors, skimming millions off the top for himself and his mother."
"Your inheritance was supposed to be his golden parachute."
"He planned to use your money to plug the final hole, divorce you, and leave you entirely destitute while he looked like a hero."
I felt a cold sweat break out on the back of my neck as the pure, calculated evil of his plan washed over me.
Every kiss, every romantic dinner, every time he told me I needed his guidance—it was all a strategy.
"His business partners have officially found out," Veronica said, her smile widening into something almost predatory.
"They have frozen his access to the firm's main accounts and locked him out of his own office building."
"Without your inheritance, he has absolutely no way to cover the massive debts coming due this Friday."
"The walls are closing in on him, Sarah, and rats always panic when they are trapped."
Just as she spoke, my new cell phone buzzed loudly on the glass table.
It was an automated alert from the credit monitoring service Veronica had set up for me.
Someone had just tried to take out a massive, high-interest personal loan using my social security number.
"He is trying to steal your identity now," Veronica laughed, though there was no humor in it.
"He has officially reached the end of his rope, and he is making fatal mistakes."
I looked out the window at the sprawling city skyline, finally feeling the terrifying grip of his control begin to shatter.

For three years, I had believed I was weak and incapable.
Now, I was the one holding the match, ready to burn his entire fraudulent empire to the ground.
