Chapter 18 - The Golden Child Abandoned

The final chapter of my brother Chase’s arrogant illusion did not conclude on the driveway of Elm Street; it concluded three days later in a cold, sterile municipal courtroom in Chicago, three hundred miles away from the home he had destroyed.

When Tiffany left him on the night of my buyout deadline, Chase had convinced himself that her departure was merely a temporary emotional reaction to pregnancy hormones. He believed that once the eviction drama was resolved—or once he somehow bullied my mother into giving him the remaining cash from their sold furniture—he could drive to Chicago, turn on his superficial charm, and bring his wife and future child back to his side.

On Monday morning, Chase drove his rented pickup truck to Chicago, arriving at the corporate law offices of Tiffany’s father’s attorneys. He walked into the conference room expecting a tearful reconciliation; instead, he was met by two senior divorce litigators and a private security guard. Tiffany wasn't even in the room; she attended the meeting via a secure video link from her parents' gated estate.

"Tiffany, baby, listen to me," Chase pleaded toward the monitor, trying to sound confident as he leaned over the conference table. "I know things have been stressful with my sister acting crazy and stealing our house, but I’ve got a plan! I’m starting a new consulting firm next month! We can get an apartment in the suburbs here in Chicago, and as soon as my business takes off—"

"Stop talking, Chase," Tiffany’s voice came through the monitor, cold, flat, and entirely devoid of the romantic admiration she had once showered on him. On the screen, she looked well-rested, sitting in a plush leather chair in her parents' library, completely detached from his reality. "There is no consulting firm. There is no money. And there is no marriage."

One of the attorneys slid a thick legal binder across the mahogany table toward him.

"Mr. Vance," the attorney said smoothly. "What you are looking at is a formal Petition for Dissolution of Marriage, accompanied by an Emergency Order for Sole Legal and Physical Custody of the unborn child, and a comprehensive Asset Separation Agreement."

"You... you're divorcing me?!" Chase gasped, looking at the monitor in shock. "We’ve only been married seven months! You can't take my baby away from me!"

"You lied to me from the day we met, Chase," Tiffany said coldly. "You told me you were a successful business executive. You told me Vance Enterprises owned real estate across the state. You told me your sister was a deadbeat who lived off your parents' charity. My father’s forensic accountants spent the last month auditing your financial history. You have never earned more than twenty thousand dollars in a single year. Your sports car was leased by your sister. Your cell phone bill was paid by your sister. And the house you promised we would raise our baby in was bought at public auction because you couldn't even pay the property taxes."

"Tiffany, please—"

"I am not spending the rest of my life living in a cramped two-bedroom apartment with a broke, thirty-two-year-old man-child and his overbearing mother," Tiffany stated clearly. "My father is covering all my medical expenses for the birth. You will be granted supervised visitation rights in Chicago at a public facility two weekends a month, provided you pass mandatory employment and background verification. If you contest this divorce, my father’s legal team will bury you in litigation until you are bankrupt for the next decade. Sign the papers, Chase. We are done."

The monitor clicked off, leaving Chase sitting alone in the cold conference room with two hostile lawyers and a security guard. The golden child—who had been taught his entire life by my mother that he was the center of the universe—was finally left with nothing but his own empty reflection.
