Chapter 2

PART 2: THE WOMAN AT THE DOOR

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The only sound in the mansion was the distant rumble of thunder outside.

The elegant older woman stood in the doorway, rain droplets glistening on her dark coat.

She looked directly at Daniel.

Not at Sophia.

Not at anyone else.

Only Daniel.

And the look on his face told everyone she wasn't a stranger.

"Mom?"

Emma whispered.

The room froze.

Sophia slowly looked up.

Mom?

Emma's mother?

The older woman stepped forward and closed the door behind her.

Daniel looked as though he wanted to disappear.

For the first time all evening, the confident attorney had no words.

The woman removed a leather folder from beneath her arm.

"I think this has gone far enough."

Her voice was calm.

Measured.

Dangerously calm.

Emma lowered her eyes.

"Mom, please..."

"No."

The older woman interrupted.

"Not this time."

Sophia felt her pulse quicken.

Something was happening.

Something nobody else understood yet.

Daniel took a step forward.

"This isn't the place."

The woman laughed bitterly.

"No?"

She opened the folder.

"Then when would have been the right place, Daniel?"

"Before your wife spent months questioning her sanity?"

"Before she cried herself to sleep wondering why her husband had stopped loving her?"

The room fell silent.

Daniel's father stared in disbelief.

"What is she talking about?"

The older woman slowly turned toward Sophia.

Her expression softened.

And for the first time that night, Sophia saw tears in someone's eyes that weren't her own.

"My name is Margaret Hayes."

She swallowed.

"And I owe you an apology."

Sophia frowned.

"For what?"

Margaret hesitated.

Then opened the folder.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Emails.

Contracts.

Travel records.

And photographs.

Daniel visibly tensed.

"Margaret..."

"Enough."

She said sharply.

Then she handed the folder to Sophia.

With trembling hands, Sophia opened it.

The first photograph showed Daniel and Emma entering a hotel.

Her stomach dropped.

The second showed them leaving together hours later.

The third showed them at a restaurant in another city.

A city Daniel claimed he had never visited.

Sophia felt the room spin.

But then she noticed something strange.

The timestamps.

The dates.

The locations.

None of it made sense.

She looked up.

"These dates..."

Margaret nodded.

"Look closer."

Sophia examined the records again.

Then realization slowly appeared in her eyes.

Every photograph had been taken during business meetings.

Public events.

Corporate conferences.

Places crowded with people.

Places where dozens of witnesses were present.

Daniel wasn't hiding an affair.

He was hiding something else.

Something much bigger.

Sophia turned another page.

And froze.

Because she recognized the company name printed across the document.

Whitmore Development Group.

Daniel's family company.

Several pages later she found financial statements.

Then offshore accounts.

Then unauthorized transfers worth millions.

Her heart began racing.

"What is this?"

Margaret looked toward Daniel.

His silence answered before she did.

"Three years ago," Margaret said quietly, "someone began stealing money from the company."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Sophia stared at him.

"Who?"

No one answered.

Until Emma finally spoke.

Her voice shook.

"My fiancé."

The room erupted.

"What?"

Daniel's father shouted.

Emma burst into tears.

"My fiancé worked in the finance department."

"He found a way to move money through shell accounts."

"When Daniel discovered it, he started gathering evidence."

Sophia struggled to process everything.

"Then why hide it from me?"

Daniel finally spoke.

His voice sounded broken.

"Because the people involved threatened anyone connected to the investigation."

Sophia's blood ran cold.

Threatened?

Daniel nodded.

"The police told me to keep it confidential."

"Even from family."

Sophia stared at him.

Months of pain.

Months of suspicion.

Months of loneliness.

All because of a secret.

But something still didn't fit.

"If that's true..."

She looked at Emma.

"Why were you always with him?"

Emma wiped her eyes.

"Because I was helping him collect evidence."

The room grew quiet.

Margaret slowly removed one final document from the folder.

A police cooperation agreement.

Signed six months earlier.

Signed by Daniel.

Signed by Emma.

And signed by a detective.

Sophia's hands trembled.

The affair she believed had destroyed her marriage never existed.

But the truth wasn't much easier to accept.

Because Daniel had lied to her every day for months.

Even if his reasons had been real.

Even if he thought he was protecting her.

Then suddenly another voice came from the entrance hall.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

Everyone turned.

A uniformed police officer stood in the doorway.

His expression was serious.

"There's been an arrest."

Daniel's face changed instantly.

The officer looked around the room.

Then delivered the words nobody expected.

"The suspect just confessed."

Sophia felt a chill crawl down her spine.

Because the suspect wasn't Emma's fiancé.

May you like

And according to the officer...

The person responsible had been living under the same roof all along.
