Chapter 8 - The Siege

Before Bennett could answer, the mansion groaned.
A deafening explosion rocked the foundation, blowing out the massive bay windows in the drawing room. Glass rained down like diamond shrapnel. Bennett lunged, covering Lily with his body and pinning her to the floor as a shockwave tore through the room.
Red emergency lights instantly flooded the estate. The wail of the sirens was ear-splitting.
"Walter!" Bennett roared into his wrist-comm.
"Boss! It's a massive breach!" Walter’s voice was drowned out by the staccato pop of automatic gunfire. "Rossi’s second-in-command! They brought a small army. They’ve breached the main gates with an explosive rig!"
"Mia!" Lily screamed, scrambling to her feet, ignoring the cuts on her arms.
"Stay behind me!" Bennett ordered, drawing his sidearm.
They sprinted through the smoke-filled corridors toward the east wing. Gunfire echoed through the halls of Cedarhaven. Bennett shot two masked men who rounded the corner, not even breaking his stride.
They burst into the guest suite. Mia was huddled under the bed, clutching Button-With-One-Sock, crying silently.

"I've got you, baby," Lily sobbed, dragging the child out and hugging her tight.
"We need to get to the panic room in the basement," Bennett said, checking his magazine. "We have to move. Now."
