Chapter 2 - The Art of War

The next morning, the financial war began.

I didn't sleep. I spent the remaining hours of the night at my kitchen island, analyzing every single document from the blue train case.

Harrison Price had been meticulous. He had drafted irrevocable trust transfers, offshore wire authorizations, and a power of attorney document that granted Valerie complete control over my mother’s liquid assets—totaling nearly four million dollars.

But Harrison had made one fatal assumption. He assumed I would be out of the country until Thursday. He had dated the final wire transfer authorizations for Tuesday afternoon.

Today.

At 8:00 AM, I sat in the sleek, glass-walled conference room of Sterling & Vance, the most ruthless corporate litigation firm on the West Coast. Across from me sat Marcus Sterling, a shark of a lawyer who charged premium rates specifically because he had never lost a high-stakes financial battle.

I slid my laptop across the table and hit play.

Marcus watched the video of Valerie striking Maya. He watched the footage of my mother being starved. He listened to the enhanced audio of Harrison Price orchestrating the theft.

Marcus didn't blink. When the footage ended, he closed the laptop and looked at me.

"Harrison Price is a dead man walking," Marcus said calmly. "And your wife is going to federal prison. What are your instructions?"

"I want them to think they succeeded," I said, leaning forward. "If we freeze the accounts now, they will panic and destroy evidence. I want Harrison to initiate the wire transfer. I want Valerie to think she has the four million dollars. And the second the money hits the offshore shell... I want you to drop the guillotine."

Marcus smiled. "A honeypot trap. I love it. I will contact the federal banking regulators and the FBI cyber division immediately. We will allow the transfer to process through a mirrored server. They will see the money in their account, but it will be entirely frozen by federal authorities. The moment Harrison hits 'send,' he commits irreversible wire fraud across international lines."

"And Valerie?"

"She is the primary beneficiary of the fraudulent shell company," Marcus noted, reviewing the forged documents. "The FBI will pick her up for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, elder abuse, and attempted grand larceny. But first, we need to secure your mother."

I left the law firm and drove straight back to Harborview Medical Center.

My mother was awake. She looked impossibly fragile against the white hospital pillows, but when I walked into the room, a spark of immense relief flooded her eyes.

"David," she rasped, reaching out with her uninjured hand.

I rushed to her bedside, taking her hand in both of mine. "I'm here, Mom. I'm so sorry. I am so goddamn sorry I left you with her."

Tears spilled down her bruised cheeks. "She told me you didn't want to talk to me. She told me you were too busy... that I was a burden."

"She lied," I choked out, fighting the burning in my own eyes. "She isolated you to steal your money. But it's over now. She is never coming near you again."

The door pushed open, and Maya walked in. She was out of her scrubs, wearing comfortable sweatpants and a hoodie. A thick white bandage covered her brow, and her cheek was swollen, but she stood tall.

"Mr. Vance," Maya said softly.

I stood up and faced the woman who had taken a beating for my family.

"Maya," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "I owe you everything. You saved her life."

Maya shook her head. "I just did my job. But Mr. Vance... there's something else. Valerie didn't just hurt her physically. She forced your mother to sign things. Stacks of papers. I tried to film it on my phone once, but Valerie caught me and smashed it."

"I know," I said, pulling out a brand new, top-of-the-line smartphone from my pocket and handing it to her. "Consider this a replacement. And don't worry about the footage. I caught it all. I just need you to be ready to testify."

Maya gripped the phone, a fierce determination settling in her eyes. "Whenever you need me. I want that woman to pay."
