Chapter 16 - The Courtroom Showdown
Two months later, the formal divorce proceedings and civil division of assets concluded in Room 3B of the Family Court House, presided over by the Honorable Judge Patricia Harrison—a judge renowned for her zero-tolerance policy toward domestic abuse and financial fraud.
Due to his ongoing incarceration awaiting trial for the corporate embezzlement charges, Julian was escorted into the courtroom by two armed county bailiffs, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and leg shackles that clanked loudly against the polished marble floor. He sat at the defense table looking entirely broken, staring at the table grain while his public defender shuffled through a thin folder of hopeless counter-claims.
Judge Harrison spent thirty minutes reading through the master report submitted by Marcus and me. When she finally looked up over her reading glasses, her expression was so severe that even the court clerk stiffened in her chair.
“In my twenty years on the bench,” Judge Harrison began, her voice echoing with judicial authority, “I have rarely encountered a divorce case characterized by such calculated cruelty, egregious financial fraud, and utter disregard for human decency by a petitioner.”
She directed her gaze straight at Julian, who couldn't even lift his head to meet her eyes.
“Mr. Vance, you attempted to force a legally binding property surrender from your wife while she was suffering from a life-threatening, 40-degree fever. You physically assaulted her when she was medically incapacitated. You utilized marital funds to maintain an extramarital affair, and you committed grand larceny against your employer, attempting to conceal your crimes behind your wife’s professional identity.”
Judge Harrison slammed her hand down onto the legal stack.
“The petitioner’s request for spousal support is categorically denied with prejudice. The real property located at 402 Elm Street is confirmed as the separate, pre-marital property of Eleanor Nora Vance, held in trust, with zero marital equity claim granted to the defendant. Furthermore, due to the proven dissipation of seventy-two thousand dollars in marital savings spent on extramarital affairs and illegal activities, the entirety of the remaining joint investment accounts, totaling sixty-four thousand dollars, is awarded solely to the plaintiff, Nora Vance, as partial restitution.”
The judge picked up her heavy wooden gavel and slammed it down with a resounding crack.
