Chapter 5 - The Heir Apparent

Despite the tension in the corporate world, Julian’s primary focus remained on Lily. He wanted her to feel secure, to understand that she was no longer a secret to be hidden, but a daughter to be celebrated.

He decided it was time to show her to the world on his terms. The annual Vance Foundation Charity Gala was the perfect venue.

When the night arrived, the Chicago History Museum was packed with the city’s elite, paparazzi swarming the red carpet. Julian stepped out of his armored Maybach, ignoring the flashbulbs. Then, he turned and lifted Lily out of the car.

She wore a custom-made emerald green dress that matched her eyes, her hair styled in soft curls. She clung to Julian’s neck, intimidated by the shouting photographers.

"Don't look at them," Julian whispered, holding her tight against his chest. "Look at me. I've got you."

Inside the gala, the murmurs were deafening. Society matrons and billionaire rivals whispered behind their champagne flutes as Julian carried the little girl to the head table.

During his keynote speech, Julian stood at the podium, holding Lily in his arms.

"For years, this foundation has focused on corporate legacy," Julian addressed the crowd, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "But legacy is not about skyscrapers or profit margins. It is about the future. I introduce to you the future of the Vance family. My daughter, Lily."

The applause was stunned but loud.

However, watching from the shadows near the bar, Richard Vance and his son, Marcus, scowled.

"He's making her untouchable," Marcus muttered to his father. "If he secures her as the public face of the trust, we’ll never get control of the company."

Richard took a sip of his bourbon, his eyes cold and dead. "Every fortress has a weakness, Marcus. Julian’s is currently wearing a green dress. We just need to find the right moment to strike."
