Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

The following Tuesday, the atmosphere at the Sterling Enterprises corporate headquarters was suffocating. The emergency board meeting had been called. Eleanor, despite being evicted and financially crippled, still legally held a seat on the board of directors. She showed up wearing last season’s Chanel, looking gaunt and desperate, flanked by a cheap, court-appointed lawyer.
The twelve members of the board sat in uncomfortable silence as Nora entered the room, exuding quiet authority. She didn't sit in a guest chair; she walked directly to the head of the long mahogany table—Richard’s old seat, which Eleanor had occupied for a decade.
"You can't sit there," Eleanor spat, trying to summon her old venom. "You are not the CEO."
"No," Nora agreed, remaining standing. "But as the executor of the majority shareholder's estate, I control sixty-eight percent of the voting power in this room."
She looked around the table, making eye contact with the twelve men and women who had enabled Eleanor for years.
"Sterling Enterprises has been rotting from the inside out," Nora addressed the board. "Eleanor has treated this company as her personal piggy bank, funding yachts, private islands, and vanity projects while laying off thousands of hard-working employees. That stops today."
"I motion for a vote of no confidence against Nora Vance," Eleanor barked desperately. "She has no corporate experience! She is a liability!"
Silence filled the room. No one seconded the motion.
Nora smiled thinly. "I have my own motion. I move for the immediate removal of Eleanor Sterling from the board of directors, effective instantly, citing gross negligence, financial misconduct, and breach of fiduciary duty. Furthermore, Vance Holdings is officially acquiring Sterling Enterprises. We are restructuring."
"You can't do this!" Eleanor yelled, looking at the board members. "Arthur, say something! Helen, we went to Yale together! Defend me!"
Arthur, an older man with silver hair, looked down at his legal pad. "The writing is on the wall, Eleanor. The market favors Ms. Vance. And... we've all seen the internal audits Ms. Vance's team sent over this morning. The embezzlement is undeniable."
"All in favor of Eleanor's removal?" Nora asked.
Twelve hands went up.

Eleanor stood there, completely isolated. She had ruled through fear and intimidation for so long that she never realized she hadn't cultivated a single ounce of genuine loyalty.
"Security," Nora said into the intercom on the desk. "Please escort the former board member out of the building. And revoke her building access."
