Chapter 1

PART 1:

The meeting room was already silent before the door opened.
A long glossy black table stretched through the center of the glass-walled room, reflecting the bright ceiling lights above it. Board members in formal suits sat on both sides, their folders closed, their faces stiff with tension. On the table near the edge, six paper coffee cups were lined up in a perfect row, untouched and waiting.
At the far end of the room sat Emma Collins.
She was twenty-six, pale, exhausted, and barely holding herself together. Her light brown hair was tied low at the back of her neck. Her white buttoned shirt was wrinkled from a night spent at her desk, and her black skirt looked too formal for someone whose eyes were red from sleeplessness. Her lips trembled every time someone looked at her.
She had not gone home.
She had not slept.
She had spent the entire night fixing a financial report that could have destroyed the company if it reached the board unfinished.
But no one in that room knew the full truth yet.
Then the glass door burst open.
Victoria Crane stormed into the meeting room.
She was forty-five, blonde hair pinned in a perfect bun, wearing a black suit over a sharp white shirt. Her face was cold, furious, and polished with the kind of arrogance that made people lower their eyes before she even spoke.
The board members turned toward her.
Emma’s body stiffened.
Victoria saw the six coffee cups on the table. Then she saw Emma sitting there with red eyes and shaking hands.
Her face twisted with rage.
“Did you think I wouldn’t notice?”
Before Emma could answer, Victoria swept the row of coffee cups off the table toward her.
Brown coffee splashed across Emma’s white shirt, soaking her sleeves, collar, and chest. More coffee struck the glossy tabletop and ran in dark streams between scattered lids and crushed paper cups. Emma gasped and pushed back in her chair, but the liquid had already soaked into her clothes.
The board members froze.
No one stood.
No one spoke.
Emma stared down at her ruined shirt, breathing in small, broken pulls. Coffee dripped from the fabric onto her lap. Her face turned pale with humiliation.
Victoria stepped closer and leaned over her.
“You embarrassed me in front of the board.”
Emma looked up, eyes wet but restrained.
“Please,” she whispered. “I worked all night.”
Victoria’s jaw clenched.
“Don’t you dare lie to me in this meeting room.”
Emma’s lips parted, but no words came.
Around the table, the board members looked away, ashamed but afraid to intervene. They had seen Victoria destroy careers with one sentence. No one wanted to be next.
Emma lowered her eyes.
For a moment, she looked smaller than the chair beneath her.
But her hands were still trembling around the folder in front of her.
May you like
Inside that folder was the truth.
And behind Victoria, the glass door began to open again.
