Chapter 6 - Whispers of Mutiny

By nightfall, the Lake Geneva estate was no longer just a fortified manor; it was a compound preparing for a siege.
Dante had initiated Level-One lockdown protocols. Every gate was bolted with reinforced steel bars, thermal drone patrols were tripled across the tree line, and all non-essential staff were confined to their quarters under armed guard. The air inside the house hummed with the high-frequency vibration of emergency generators and the tense, heavy silence of men waiting for a war to begin.
Lorenzo sat in the command center beneath the armory, watching the green glow of the perimeter monitors. Dante stood beside him, reviewing the shift logs Victor Thorne had manipulated over the past month.
“Look at this,” Dante muttered, pointing a calloused finger at the screen. “Victor rotated our most loyal veterans—guys from the old neighborhood who would take a bullet for you—out to the shipping docks in Chicago. In their place, he brought in fifteen new security contractors for the outer perimeter guard.”
“Whose contractors?” Lorenzo asked, his eyes tracking a patrol squad moving across the eastern lawn on the monitor.
“An outfit out of Detroit. Ex-military, private security mercenaries. On paper, they were vetted by a shell company we use for tax write-offs. But I ran the wire transfers through our backdoor server. The money funding their contracts traced back to a holding account in Zurich controlled by the Romano family.”
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened. The Romanos were the only syndicate in the Midwest with enough manpower and money to challenge the Vance dynasty. For five years, there had been a fragile, bloody truce between Chicago and their territory. If Victor Thorne had been selling Vance secrets to the Romanos—and using Romano gold to replace Lorenzo’s loyal guards with mercenaries inside his own gates—the mutiny was already inside the walls.
“He brought Elena and the boy here to use as leverage,” Lorenzo deduced coldly. “Victor knew Matteo’s son was alive. He knew that if the Romanos launched a strike on the compound, holding my brother’s heir hostage would force me to surrender the Chicago transit corridors without firing a shot.”
“Or,” Dante said darkly, “he brought them here so that when he killed you, he could puppet the four-year-old boy as the new Vance heir, ruling the syndicate as the kid's 'regent' until Leo was old enough to be disposed of.”
The door to the command center buzzed. A technician handed Lorenzo a secure tablet displaying the DNA analysis results from the lab.
Lorenzo looked at the screen.
Probability of Paternity (Matteo Vance / Leo Hayes): 99.98% Bloodline Match: Confirmed.
Lorenzo closed his eyes for a fraction of a second. The ghost of his brother was no longer a phantom haunting his memories; he was upstairs, sleeping in a warm bed, trusting Lorenzo to keep the wolves at bay.
“We have fifteen Romano mercenaries patrolling our eastern wall,” Lorenzo said, opening his eyes, the amber iris burning with lethal clarity. “And we have thirty loyal men inside the main house. We don't wait for Victor and the Romanos to make their move.”

“What’s the play, boss?” Dante asked, cocking his assault rifle with a sharp, satisfying click.
“We purge the perimeter tonight,” Lorenzo ordered. “Before the sun comes up, I want every mercenary on my property disarmed, interrogated, and dumped in the lake. And Dante? Leave one alive. I want to send Victor a message that his chess game is over.”
