Chapter 19

Julian stared down at their joined hands. For the first time in fifteen years, the undisputed king of the Seattle underworld was entirely speechless.
"You realize what you're asking for," Julian finally said, his voice a low gravel. "If you stay, you aren't a hostage. You aren't paying off a debt. You're a target. My enemies will know exactly what you mean to me."
"They can try," Clara said, a fierce, unapologetic smile touching her lips. "I know how to stitch a bullet wound, Julian. And as of tonight, I know how to use a scalpel offensively."
A genuine, deep laugh rumbled in Julian's chest. It was a sound few people had ever heard. He pulled her off the tailgate, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against him.
"Victor is going to hate this," Julian murmured, resting his forehead against hers. "Having a paramedic overriding his tactical decisions."
"Victor will get over it," Clara whispered, closing the distance and kissing him. It was a slow, deliberate promise. No fear, no debt, just absolute choice.
A heavy, wet nose nudged Clara's thigh. She broke the kiss, looking down to see Samson sitting patiently beside them. His brindle coat was matted with mud and God-knew-what-else, but he looked incredibly pleased with himself.
"I think he wants to go home," Clara smiled, reaching down to scratch the massive dog behind the ears.
"Then let's go home," Julian said.
They got into the SUV, leaving the rotting lumber mill behind. As they drove away from Blackwood Reach, Clara didn't look back at the town that had kept her trapped for seven years. The scar on her shoulder, the one she had refused to let anyone fix, felt less like a brand of trauma and more like a badge of survival.

The drive north to Seattle was quiet, but it wasn't the suffocating silence of fear she had experienced days ago. It was the quiet of two dangerous, broken people who had finally found pieces that fit together.
The Thorne syndicate was about to undergo a massive restructuring. The corruption had been purged. And Julian was returning to his throne not alone, but with a queen who knew exactly how to navigate the blood and the dark.
