Chapter 4 - The Blueprint of Obsession

In a stark hospital conference room, Detective Miller spread out a series of polaroids on the table. David stared at them, his stomach turning.

"Your sister’s basement wasn't on the original architectural blueprints," Miller explained. "She paid an unlicensed contractor in cash to dig it out before the foundation was poured, then fired him and finished the interior herself."

The photos showed a tiny, windowless room lined with acoustic foam. There was a small cot, an educational chart on the wall, and a portable toilet.

"She fed him. She gave him books," Miller continued, rubbing his temples. "We found diaries, David. Hundreds of pages. She had a miscarriage three years ago, didn't she?"

David nodded numbly. "Yes. She and her ex-husband, Mark, lost a baby boy. They divorced shortly after. But... she seemed fine. She went to therapy. She moved here to start over."

"She didn't start over," Miller corrected. "She started planning. The diary outlines how she felt you and Sarah didn't 'appreciate' Leo. She believed God wanted her to be his mother. She documented everything—how she slipped a sedative into his juice at the family barbecue, how she carried him out the side gate to her car while everyone was watching the fireworks."

David slammed his fist on the table. "She was right there! She was at my house, comforting my wife while my son was locked in a box under her feet!"

"There's something else," Miller said softly. "The contractor she hired? He’s missing. And based on the security footage from the toll roads near the BBQ that night, Elena’s car wasn't the only one that left in a hurry. She didn't act alone."
